Guns: Fading from National Conversation, But Still Generating Some Unpleasant Mania

REASON MAGAZINE 4 Hours Ago Guns: Fading from National Conversation, But Still Generating Some Unpleasant Mania by Brian Doherty As Reason 24/7 noted earlier today, guns and gun regulations are fading from the public conversation post-Sandy Hook a bit quicker than most would have predicted. While I wrote this American Conservative article "Gun Control R.I.P." before Sandy Hook, I still think its prediction that American citizens or politicians are not going to be quick to support much in the way of increased gun control will likely hold up, though the future remains devilishly difficult to predict. At any rate, a return to the gun control status quo of a decade ago via a revival of the pointless but somewhat popular "assault weapon ban," if that even ends up happening, is still not much in the way of advanced gun control on the march. I think the main reason for this is not that we are bloody-minded lunatics in thrall to the NRA, but that most people reali...

American Thinker- Print Article

AMERICANTHINKER.COM 21 Hours Ago American Thinker- Print Article by Edward Paltzik As a parent of two boys under the age of four, a responsible gun owner, and an NRA member, I'd like to take this opportunity to rebut "Sensible Arms Control," in which my good friend Brett Joshpe argues for more gun control following the Newtown tragedy. Gun Rights are Inalienable and Natural There is nothing "lazy" about characterizing the inalienable right to defend self, family, and property, and the right to hunt, as "natural rights." Preaching from their ivory towers (typically capitol buildings, college campuses, gated communities, and urban apartments), gun control proponents casually dismiss the dire consequences of disarming law-abiding citizens. I own a home in an empty corner of Maine, where my family and I are generally out of range of rapid police assistance both on our property and while traveling in the area. As a concealed carry permit holder, I h...

Piers Morgan and the Failure of British Gun Control

FRONTPAGE MAGAZINE 21 Hours Ago Piers Morgan and the Failure of British Gun Control by David Paulin It’s a strange omission: liberal pundits like CNN’s Piers Morgan are fulminating over America’s “gun culture” following Newtown’s school massacre — yet they seem blissfully ignorant about what happened after Britain’s draconian handgun ban following a school massacre in Scotland, in 1996, eerily similar to Newtown’s. After the ban, more than 160,000 law-abiding citizens gave up their handguns. The idea was to stop gun violence. But ironically, crime-related gun violence jumped a whopping 40 percent in the two years after the ban. And since then, gun crime has continued to soar at an alarming rate. Anti-gun liberals may be aghast, but as that old NRA bumper sticker stated: “When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” One wonders how long before guns are used in another massacre in the United Kingdom; or perhaps next time it will be done by a madman carrying a can of gasoli...

Articles: The Conservative Response to Outing Legal Gun Owners

AMERICANTHINKER.COM 18 Hours Ago Articles: The Conservative Response to Outing Legal Gun Owners by Elise Cooper As Christmas was approaching, one newspaper, the Journal News of White Plains, New York, decided to take on Scrooge's personality of mean-spiritedness. They printed an interactive map that included the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. Each red dot represented an individual gun owner. They were able to obtain this information because New York state law allows it to be part of the public record. American Thinker was able to interview a few of these gun owners about how they felt about being "outed" by this newspaper. In clicking randomly on the red dots, American Thinker found that gun owners make up a wide range of people. Some gun owners contacted did not want to talk, some did not even know they had been outed, some spoke but did not want their name published, and others spoke on the record. There w...

Gun-Control Converts Could Pave Way to New Laws

NATIONAL JOURNAL 12 Hours Ago Gun-Control Converts Could Pave Way to New Laws Sen. Robert Casey, D-Pa., does not shy away from the “pro-gun Democrat” label. He has a B-plus rating with the National Rifle Association, a score docked only because he supported the confirmation of Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, and he represents a state with a strong hunting tradition. But for Casey, last week’s massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School was a pivotal moment. Casey said he found himself emotionally rocked by the Newtown, Conn., tragedy in a way that was different from the mass shootings in Aurora, ., this summer or in Tucson, , last year. “It hit me in a way that the others didn’t, and that’s terribly unfair to those other families, but I would not be honest if I said otherwise. This hit me in a way that no other incident has in years,” Casey said in an interview. “I found myself being more emotional about this than virtually anything I’ve ever worked on.” ...

Chicago: 1.5 People Killed Every Day in 2012 Despite Gun Laws

AMMOLAND.COM 11 Hours Ago Chicago: 1.5 People Killed Every Day in 2012 Despite Gun Laws AmmoLand Gun News Washington DC - -(Ammoland.com)-Chicago has long been the proving ground for gun-grabbers’ anti-2nd Amendment zeal. And with the most draconian gun control laws in the land, you’d think it would be an idyllic oasis of safety: a place where violence and evil have no place. However, the fact is, Chicago is an extremely violent city because criminals possess the largest portion of guns there. And in 2012 alone, 1.5 people died each day after being shot by bad people with guns. Think about it — Chicago long ago went in the very direction Barack Obama, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and Mayor Michael Bloomberg want our entire country to go with in regard to gun laws. And has this made the city safer? Absolutely not. Instead, 532 people were killed by criminals with guns in Chicago during the 2012 calendar year alone. And don’t forgot, apart from those who were killed, ove...

Twitter analysis shows massive drop in ‘gun control’ discussion

BLOG.SFGATE.COM 5 Hours Ago Twitter analysis shows massive drop in ‘gun control’ discussion by Caleb Garling Mentions of 'Gun Control', 'NRA' and 'Fiscal Cliff' on Twitter. (Source: Topsy. Hat tip: Jared Keller of Bloomberg) Data from analytics outfit Topsy indicates discussion on Twitter about gun law reform laws has plummeted almost to the levels they were before the shootings in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14th. A quick pull of the term “gun control” on Twitter indicates the term skyrocketed on the day of the shooting, only to fall back recently to almost the same levels as before Sandy Hook. The terms “gun reform”, “handguns”, “school shooting” and “gun murder” return similar results. The terms “guns” and “assault rifles” are a bit higher than their pre-Sandy Hook levels. (You can do your own analysis here) Granted: Twitter is not representative of all public dialogue. Surely, very impassioned conversations on gun control are happening righ...

Is Suggesting Gun Control Racist?

CONSERVATIVEREPORT.ORG 4 Hours Ago Is Suggesting Gun Control Racist? by Chip Jones on January 2, 2013 As 2012 drew to a close, our President has renewed his attempts to strengthen gun control legislation nationally. But as one looks empirically at locations where there is the most stringent gun control, we almost always find the highest murder rate. That being said, we hardly ever look at who is murdered. Let’s use the President’s home town of Chicago as an example. One would think that he would learn best in his own back yard, and where his long time political friend and ex Chief of Staff is Mayor. Let’s look at the record of firearms limitation in Chicago. When Rahm Emmanuel took office as Mayor of Chicago in mid 2011, the murder rate had hit a modern era low of 433. In his first full year in office, 2012, murders spiked to 532, amounting to a 23% increase in total numbers of murders. As we look at the centerpieces of the national debate that has ensued after the Newtown, ...

This is What Gun Control Looks Like: 532 Murdered in Chicago in 2012

OFFGRIDSURVIVAL.COM 8 Hours Ago This is What Gun Control Looks Like: 532 Murdered in Chicago in 2012 Filed under News January 2, 2013 Posted by: Off Grid Survival Tweet If gun control laws work, why were 532 people murdered last year in the Anti-Gun City of Chicago? According to statistics compiled by the Crime in Chicago website, 532 people were murdered and 2,670 people were shot during 2012 in the city of Chicago. The number increased by 71 deaths from the previous year. That means in a city, where it’s virtually impossible for a law abiding citizen to legally own a gun, an average 7.3 people were shot every day. 2013 off to a deadly start: In the first 12 hours of 2013, 15 people have already been shot on the streets of Chicago; 3 have lost their life. When you see numbers like this, you really have to ask yourself why the politicians are so interested in taking law abiding citizens guns? In my opinion, Chicago is a prime example of what happens when these Anti-Gun p...

Ted Nugent Pens Open Letter To Vice President Joe Biden on Gun Control

ULTIMATECLASSICROCK.COM 2 Hours Ago Ted Nugent Pens Open Letter To Vice President Joe Biden on Gun Control by Sterling Whitaker Jeff Swensen / Saul Loeb-Pool, Getty Images Arch-conservative rocker and reality TV star Ted Nugent hasn’t been shy about his stance on gun control, and now the avid hunter and gun enthusiast has shared his thoughts on the matter with Vice President Joe Biden. In an open letter published by the conservative-leaning Washington Times, Nugent offers his service to Biden’s newly-appointed commission to end gun violence, while insisting — surprise! — that banning automatic weapons is not a viable option. Nugent writes that he is as concerned as any American about the recent spate of gun violence. “I too want nothing more than to see evil, senseless massacres stopped. I concur with the president and caring people everywhere: It’s time to end these slaughters,” the rocker states. “While I strongly differ with President Obama on many issues, I agree with him th...

Draconian Gun Control Bill Set for Introduction in Illinois

THEINTELHUB.COM 3 Hours Ago Draconian Gun Control Bill Set for Introduction in Illinois by Alex Thomas SHADE the Motion Picture - An Ambellas & Bermas Film — Watch Trailer HERE By Alex Thomas theintelhub.com January 2, 2012 According to multiple reports, including an alert from the Illinois State Rifle Association, the Illinois legislature is set to introduce a draconian gun control bill that would move to outlaw almost all modern firearms in the state. The exact text of the bill is unknown at this time, but if reports are accurate, it is set to be one of the worst in the history of the country. An urgent alert from the Illinois State Rifle Association outlined what could be in the bill: The ISRA has learned from a credible source that Illinois Senate President John Cullerton will introduce a so called “assault weapons” ban on Wednesday when the legislature returns for its “lame duck” session. Cullerton hopes to ramrod the bill through and get it to Governor Quinn f...

Gun-hating New York Journal News Hires Armed Security After Map Controversy

NEWS BUSTERS 4 Hours Ago Gun-hating New York Journal News Hires Armed Security After Map Controversy by Matthew Sheffield Less than two weeks after a New York regional newspaper created a national controversy by publishing an online map of registered gun owners in its circulation area, the Journal News has once again brought attention to itself by hiring armed guards to protect its employees, an obvious case of hypocrisy given the publication’s virulently anti-gun editorial stance. As you would expect, the Journal News, which had previously touted its love of transparency and an informed public when it published its database of pistol permit holders, did not reveal this information to the public. The news was broken instead by the Rockland Times, a rival newspaper. The controversy began December 23 when the paper published an interactive map with “pushpins” indicating the names and addresses of everyone listed as having a permit to carry a handgun within Westchester and Rockla...

Record Gun Buys in December as Gun Control Debate Loses Heat

GLOBAL.CHRISTIANPOST.COM 2 Hours Ago Record Gun Buys in December as Gun Control Debate Loses Heat by Brittney R. Villalva A background check is required before a buyer can lawfully purchase a gun; that number is on the rise, according to the FBI. The agency recorded 2.8 million background checks during the month of December, up from the 2 million in November that occurred before lawmakers began to consider stricter gun control laws, Reuters reported. Following the Newtown Connecticut shooting that resulted in 28 deaths, Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein and President Obama both strongly affirmed that new legislation would be passed in regards to gun control. "I think there are a vast majority of responsible gun owners out there who recognize that we can't have a situation in which somebody with severe psychological problems is able to get the kind of high capacity weapons that this individual in Newtown obtained and gun down our kids," Obama said during an intervi...
