Hawaii gun lobby shoots down gun bills

SFGATE.COM 7 Hours Ago Hawaii gun lobby shoots down gun bills by Anita Hofschneider HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii gun enthusiasts are organizing to stop gun control bills from gaining any traction at the state Legislature. Hawaii Rifle Association President Harvey Gerwig said Wednesday that more than 400 people successfully opposed a bill that would have made firearm instructors liable for accidents that occur during training. Rep. Karl Rhoads, a Democrat who chairs the Judiciary committee and supported the bill, says he wasn't swayed by the crowd of opposition. "In the aftermath of Newtown, I don't think it's responsible not to do something," Rhoads said, referring to the Connecticut town where 20 first-graders and six adults were killed in a Dec. 20 shooting rampage. Rhoads recommended that the committee pass the bill but the committee voted not to approve it. Rhoads said he doubts the chances of similar measures this session after seeing the gun lobby&#

Suspect Who Tried to Attack Woman With a Knife is Stopped by Good Samaritan With a Gun

GUNSSAVELIVES.NET 2 Hours Ago Suspect Who Tried to Attack Woman With a Knife is Stopped by Good Samaritan With a Gun A WA man tried to attack an unnamed female with a knife on Wednesday. The woman ran from the suspect, but he chased her, still wielding the knife. An armed bystander witnessed the incident and fearing for the female’s safety, he drew his gun and fired one shot in the air. It is unclear if the bystander fired a shot in the air because he was afraid of possibly hitting the female or another reason. The suspect stopped his pursuit of the female at that point. Several other bystanders then help subdue the man until police arrived and arrested him. It appears the suspect and victim knew each other and the incident may have been an incident of domestic violence. The bystander who fired a shot was detained briefly by police and then released. Biden says curbs on guns won't stop massacres

FOX NEWS 2 Hours Ago Biden says curbs on guns won't stop massacres WASHINGTON – Vice President Joe Biden says curbs on guns can reduce firearm deaths but won't ensure an end to mass killings like December's slaying of 20 first-graders in Newtown, Conn. Biden met with Senate Democrats on Thursday to urge them to support the gun restrictions that President Barack Obama has proposed. They include bans on assault weapons and on high-capacity magazines for ammunition and requiring all gun buyers to undergo background checks. After that session, Biden told reporters that the administration's plans would not eliminate the chances of another mass shooting, or bring gun deaths down to 1,000 yearly from the current 30,000 estimated by the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence. Biden said lives can be saved by curbing firearms without restricting the right to bear arms.

Gun Control Law leaves Cuomo Pistol-Whipped in Poll

SAYANYTHINGBLOG.COM 2 Hours Ago Gun Control Law leaves Cuomo Pistol-Whipped in Poll Gov. Cuomo’s job-approval rating is dropping faster than a speeding bullet. Republicans and gun owners started turning against him after he rammed through the nation’s first post-Newtown gun-control law, a new poll found. Democrat Cuomo’s approval rating slid from 74-13 percent last month to 59-28 in the Quinnipiac University poll released yesterday, a 30-point differential swing. The news came a day after the New York affiliate of the National Rifle Association filed an intent to sue to stop enforcement of the law, arguing it unconstitutionally deprives New Yorkers of their rights. While voters in nongun homes gave Cuomo a whopping 68-19 thumbs- up, those households with guns turned against him by 50-40, the Jan. 23-28 telephone survey of 1,127 state voters found. His standing remained high in the city and suburbs, but not so in upstate and in rural areas.
