Politics Over Privacy

Tuesday, June 11th Politics Over Privacy The debate over our government collecting the data on nearly every portion of your life - your phone calls, emails, video chats - has been interesting to follow. It's also an extremely important conversation to be having. We shouldn't be so quick to give up our civil liberties, picking and choosing which parts of the Constitution we want to enforce and which parts are negotiable. Like many conservatives, I struggle with finding that balance between fighting terrorism and our privacy. But there are two issues that plague me about the recent revelations. The first i

Protesters call for repeal of NY gun law

SYRACUSE.COM 2 Hours Ago Protesters call for repeal of NY gun law ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- More than 1,000 demonstrators have again filled a park outside the state Capitol calling for repeal of New York's new gun law. While cheering former Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino and Jeannine Pirro, a broadcaster and former Westchester County district attorney, protesters sang "God Bless America" and held signs for the Second Amendment right to bear arms. Pirro says Tuesday authorities should hunt criminals, not try to criminalize gun owners. The law generally sets a seven-bullet limit in magazines, tightens the definition of illegal "assault weapons" and requires owners of many formerly legal semi-automatic guns to register them. Repeal now appears unlikely. Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos says amendments haven't been discussed in recent meetings between the governor and legislative leaders. Thousands of protesters attended a similar rally in Febr

Gingrey to offer D.C. military right-to-carry amendment

DAILYCALLER.COM 2 Hours Ago Gingrey to offer D.C. military right-to-carry amendment Rep. Gingrey today submitted an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would exempt active duty military personnel from the District of Columbia's punitive firearms rules. "Our servicemen and women are highly-trained, highly-skilled, and the most professional fighting force in the world," Gingrey said. "This amendment expresses the sense that D.C.'s 40,000 active duty military have the right to carry their firearms without risk of violating D.C. law, and in some cases,  finding themselves in jail ."  About Gingrey's amendment Servicemen and women have been prosecuted because of the District's unconstitutional prohibition, despite their training in the use of firearms, which is a travesty. These 40,000 individuals must request a waiver or be subject to D.C.'s onerous handgun regulations. Studies have shown that firearms are a crime deterrent. The

Did Obama Just Legalize Statutory Rape?

PJMEDIA.COM 5 Hours Ago Did Obama Just Legalize Statutory Rape? by  Bryan Preston While we were sleeping, President Obama and a federal court changed things quite a bit.  The Guardian  reports,  with a lie in its lead . The  Obama administration  will stop trying to limit sales of emergency contraception pills, making the morning-after pill available to women of all ages without a prescription. "Women of all ages…" Women of age 85 aren't going to be getting the morning-after pill. They don't need it. Most emales under age 17 are not, in the eyes of the law, women. They're girls. They have not reached the age of consent in most states. Sexual intercourse with them can constitute statutory rape, at least. It may also constitute pedophilia. The change that now allows girls to obtain the morning-after pill without a prescription and with no questions asked may declare open season on them by sexual predators. The point of the change was, in fact, to make it possible f

THEBLAZE.COM 4 Hours Ago Report: Obamacare to Increase Premiums in Ohio by 88 Percent by  James Rollins Remember when President Barack Obama and Democrat Congresswoman  Nancy Pelosi promised in 2012  that we'd all have lower rates thanks to the Affordable Care Act? Well, that promise may come with a few caveats, according to the Manhattan Institute's Avik Roy. Getty Images. "[B]ased on the rates submitted by insurers to date, the average individual-market health insurance premium in 2014 will come in around $420, 'representing an increase of 88 percent' relative to 2013," Roy writes in  Forbes , citing the  Ohio Department of Insurance . Yes, according to Ohio officials, individual-market health premiums may increase as much as 88 percent thanks to Obamacare. "We have warned of these increases," said Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor in a statement. "Consumers will have fewer choices and pay much higher premiums for their health insurance starting in 2014.&

Report: DHS Halted Background Checks to Meet Flood of Amnesty Requests

BREITBART.COM 2 Hours Ago Report: DHS Halted Background Checks to Meet Flood of Amnesty Requests by  Mike Flynn by  Mike Flynn 11 Jun 2013, 11:20 AM PDT post a comment In October 2012, Judicial Watch, acting on a tip from a whistleblower, filed a FOIA request with DHS for "all communications, memoranda, emails, policy guidance, directives, initiatives, and any other correspondence respecting the scope and extent of background checks to be performed (or not) on aliens applying to the Obama administration's DACA program." [DACA is the acronym for Obama's temporary amnesty directive.]  Memos and emails obtained through the FOIA reveal that the agency suspended conducting full criminal background checks on illegals applying for the program and, instead, instituted a " lean and lite " process, which allowed the applicant to continue moving through the system.  DHS staff were even  informed  that that an immigrant's failure to produce valid identification sho

5 Ways to Thwart the NSA and Gov’t from Spying on You

THEBLAZE.COM 3 Hours Ago 5 Ways to Thwart the NSA and Gov't from Spying on You by  Liz Klimas Recent news of the NSA collecting metadata of phone calls from communication companies, along with federal law enforcement seeming to continue to press for expansion of its ability to collect personal information online without warrants, has many questioning how safe their own privacy is. Although a  Pew Research Center poll found 56 percent of Americans  back the NSA's spying on call records, many have still expressed outrage over what they feel is a breech of their expected privacy and have labeled the whistleblower of the classified government program a hero. Those concerned about their communication privacy — be it over the phone or on the Web — may then be wondering: Is there anything to be done? Is full privacy even possible? (Image: Shutterstock.com ) We went searching and found a few answers. Here are a few tips: Go off the grid:  Although the most extreme measure, not communi

Did Hillary Clinton’s Run for the Presidency End Monday Morning?

BREITBART.COM 3 Hours Ago Did Hillary Clinton's Run for the Presidency End Monday Morning? by  Kristinn Taylor by  Kristinn Taylor 11 Jun 2013, 6:18 AM PDT post a comment Team Clinton knew Hillary had taken what for others would have been a career-ending hit. In response, Clinton's debut on Twitter was rushed out within hours of the CBS story breaking. Clinton's Twitter bio was hastily rewritten after news of her impending Twitter debut was first leaked to select reporters. (Image from  Buzzfeed )  The distraction worked for now. Reporters reacted like schoolgirls, gushing about Clinton's bio and hipster-wannabe photo on her Twitter homepage. Scores of articles were written about Clinton joining Twitter and what it meant for her plans, "TBD", for the 2016 presidential election. In contrast, only a handful of articles were written about the State Department scandal with none of them holding Clinton responsible—even the CBS News report cast Clinton as unaware t
