Harry Reid Is Trying To Pressure Republicans Into Supporting Gun Control

BUSINESSINSIDER.COM 5 Hours Ago Harry Reid Is Trying To Pressure Republicans Into Supporting Gun Control by Brett LoGiurato With a new video released Monday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid aims pressure certain Senate Republicans into supporting universal background checks as part of comprehensive gun control legislation. The two-minute video features clips of various Republicans including Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), and Dean Heller (R-Nev.) — saying in past interviews that they would consider supporting universal background checks. The video then cuts to a speech from President Barack Obama last week, in which he urged Congress not to "get squishy." The video comes as nearly every Democrat-proposed gun control measure faces trouble in the Senate. "We need everybody to remember how we felt 100 days ago," Obama says in the video, "and make sure that what we said at that time was...

NPR Mentions 'Serious' GOP Opposition to Gun Control, Saves SenateDemocrats From Blame

NEWS BUSTERS 5 Hours Ago NPR Mentions 'Serious' GOP Opposition to Gun Control, Saves Senate Democrats From Blame by Matt Vespa If we're going to have our tax dollars spent on NPR covering political news, can't we at least insist that they report the news accurately? On Friday's All Things Considered, co-Host Audie Cornish opened an eight-minute segment by saying, “the gay marriage debate arrived at the Supreme Court, and White House efforts to tighten the nation's gun laws ran into serious Republican opposition.” Granted, the Tea Party caucus in the Senate is planning on a filibuster of the anti-gun bill that’s making its way to the floor, but the “serious” opposition comes from within the Democratic Party, as no less a partisan Democrat than Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid noted a few weeks ago. On March 19, Ed O’Keefe and Philip Rucker of the Washington Post reported that Sen. Feinstein’s assault weapons ban amendment to the gun control bill ha...

Attitudes Toward Guns Returning To Pre-shooting Levels

BREAKING NEWS FROM NPR Once Again, Polls Show Attitudes Toward Guns Returning To Pre-shooting Levels by MARK MEMMOTT April 01, 2013 2:13 PM Enlarge image Guns on display at a show in Chantilly, Va., in July 2012. Jim Lo Scalzo /EPA /Landov The day after last December's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School we wrote that: "The tragedy in Newtown, Conn., will surely spur pollsters to ask Americans again about guns, gun ownership, gun laws and the Second Amendment. "If recent experience is a good guide, public opinion may not shift too much." A week later, the Pew Research Center reported that "the public's attitudes toward gun control have shown only modest change in the wake of last week's deadly shooting." Then last week, a CBS News poll found that what had appeared to be at least a bit more support for stricter gun laws after the Newtown shootings had dropped since then. Now, with the Senate soon to vote on initiatives i...

Op-ed: White House cooks the books in push for gun control

WASHINGTON EXAMINER 6 Hours Ago Op-ed: White House cooks the books in push for gun control Although the assault weapons ban favored by the Obama administration was unceremoniously shot down by Congress last week, the White House has not slowed down its public relations machine. On social media websites like Facebook, Obama has published an image citing several statistics in support of universal background checks for would-be gun buyers. Among the claims is this: "Since 1968, more Americans have died from gun violence than in all of America's wars -- combined." The statistic certainly produces the intended emotional effect -- but is it accurate? According to official records and accepted historical estimates, the number of Americans killed in action in our nation's 12 major wars is roughly 860,000. (This estimate excludes those who died from disease.) According to statistics compiled from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports, 831,131 incidents of h...

Tight gun laws ahead for Connecticut

BBC 41 Minutes Ago Tight gun laws ahead for Connecticut 1 April 2013Last updated at 22:46 ET Share this page Newtown parents, including Mark Barden, spoke at the state capitol building on Monday to call for a complete ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines Lawmakers in the US state of Connecticut have agreed to a sweeping set of gun restrictions, including a ban on new high-capacity magazines. The proposal requires background checks on all gun sales and expands the state's assault weapons ban. It comes as new federal gun measures appear to have stalled in Congress. Debate over US gun laws was reignited after a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 children, at a Connecticut primary school in December. Tighter gun restrictions also passed in New York and Colorado in the wake of the shooting. On Monday, six relatives of children and a school staff member killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December travelled to the state capitol of Hartford to call for a...

Perez Donated to Menendez

NATIONAL REVIEW 4 Hours Ago Perez Donated to Menendez Thomas Perez meeting with Senator Bob Menendez (via Menendez's press office) Unsurprisingly, Obama labor-secretary nominee Tom Perez has a track record of donating to liberal Democrats, including scandal-plagued senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey. According to the Center for Responsive Politics' OpenSecrets.org , in 2006 a Thomas Perez of Takoma Park, Md., donated $500 to John Kerry, $250 to the DNC Services Corporation, and $250 to Menendez, who is currently embattled in a potential ethics scandal over allegations that he provided political favors to a donor, Salomon Melgen. Menendez met with Perez two weeks ago, and warmly praised him in a statement issued after the meeting, calling Perez "a remarkable candidate" and "incredibly knowledgeable." A Thomas Perez of Takoma Park, Md., also donated $250 in 2008 to Judith Feder, a Democratic congressional candidate who lost to...

Fwd: A One-Size-Fits-All Approach Won’t Achieve Health Care Reform

Having trouble reading this email? Click here to view in your browser. A One-Size-Fits-All Approach Won't Achieve Health Care Reform Last week, Governor Haslam announced that the state of Tennessee would not expand Medicaid as envisioned by President Obama under the Affordable Care Act.  The federal government's insistence on a one-size-fits-all approach under Medicaid is a poor solution for solving our health insurance access problems, especially given the access problems so many of our citizens already face under this program.  The governor's preferred approach – to use federal dollars to expand Tennesseans' access to private coverage – seems like it may be a better solution for access to health insurance, and it seems to me...
