We need an evidence-based, randomized trial on gun control

KEVINMD.COM 3 Hours Ago We need an evidence-based, randomized trial on gun control by Ryan Madanick For just a moment, let’s take a scientific viewpoint about gun control here and try to leave emotions (and the Constitutional argument) out. The best type of study to determine whether gun control and/or regulation would be a randomized trial: randomizing a state or country to regulation or not. Since that’s not going to happen, the next best type of evidence we have to go by is observational, either case-control or cohort studies. The exposure is: gun control regulation. This could be considered dichotomously (yes/no) or continuous (level of regulation from strict to lenient/none). The outcome is: death by guns. This could be considered in numerous ways: absolute numbers of gun deaths annually; relative numbers of gun deaths adjusting for size of population; number of gun massacres, etc. We could even consider any violent deaths, if you want to be more general. In a case-co

Longer Lines, Shorter Hours?

Monday, February 25th Longer Lines, Shorter Hours? Barack Obama and the Democrats have you believing that the world is going to come to an end this Friday if we let sequestration cuts go into effect and cut less than 3% from our budget this year. They've told us that kids won't be able to get daycare, criminals will be set free and you will experience longer lines at the airport. Take a look at the doomsday effect laid out by the New York Times . For all of the concern about cutting 2.3% of federal spending, how about the laws already in place that will have more drastic effects on our economy. Take for

Department of Justice Report Finds Gun Control Proposals Ineffective

OUTDOORHUB.COM 9 Hours Ago Department of Justice Report Finds Gun Control Proposals Ineffective by Outdoor Hub Reporters on February 22, 2013 submitted by: Daniel Xu A report by the Department of Justice’s National Institute for Justice (NIJ) summarizes their findings for the current wave of gun proposals as mostly “ineffective.” The report titled Summary of Select Firearm Violence Prevention Strategies was obtained by the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) and subsequently published on their website. The report touches on many points in the gun control debate, such as universal background checks, “high capacity” magazines and “assault weapons.” The NIJ memo gives a cursory rundown of these categories, but the overarching message is that the gun control proposals that are being debated now will not work. Below is a snapshot of the NIJ’s findings. Gun buybacks “Gun buybacks are ineffective as generally implemented,” says the report. T

Drones to be used to enforce Gun Control

OFFGRIDSURVIVAL.COM 4 Hours Ago Drones to be used to enforce Gun Control by Rob Richardson Tweet Drones and Gun Control, two topics that go against every tenet this country was founded on, are now being fused together in an attempt to roll back the rights of every American citizen. In a promotional video from the makers of the Shadowhawk drone, a 50lb mini helicopter used by law enforcement agencies, the company promotes its drone technology for use in gun control. In the video, the company shows a mock scenario where law enforcement officers use the drone to follow two men who are engaged in the private sale of a handgun and a rifle. Remember, the sale of private firearms is not illegal. Although gun control activists are trying to legislate your rights away, it’s currently 100% legal for you to sell your guns to another private individual. Despite that fact, the promotional video champions the use of its drone as a way to track and arrest Americans who are selling their gu

Federal court says concealed gun permits not protected by 2nd Amendment

THEBLACKSPHERE.NET 2 Hours Ago Federal court says concealed gun permits not protected by 2nd Amendment by Tami Jackson Associated Press DENVER – A federal appeals court has ruled that permits allowing people to carry concealed weapons are not protected by the Second Amendment. The ruling by the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was issued Friday in a case involving Washington state resident Gray Peterson. A federal judge in 2011 tossed out Peterson’s lawsuit filed against Denver and the state’s Department of Public Safety. Peterson claims that being denied a concealed weapons permit because he was not a Colorado resident violated his Second Amendment rights to bear firearms. According to gun rights groups, Colorado is one of about two dozen states that do not honor concealed weapons permits from Washington state. Colorado recognizes weapons permits issued by other states, but only for states that recognize Colorado permits. Washington state does not recognize Colorado

"Wayne LaPierre" Registry Will Be Used to Confiscate Your Guns

National Rifle Association executive vice president and CEO Wayne LaPierre continued speaking out against President Obama’s recent gun control proposals Saturday night, zeroing in on “the real consequences of background checks,” according to the NRA.   The organization has been targeted by many on the left in the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary last December. While the NRA argues that more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens creates a safer community, many in the administration and on the left disagree, saying it leads to more gun violence and accidental deaths. The NRA has been publicizing a memo it obtained from the Justice Department that says the success of universal background checks would depend in part on “requiring gun registration,” and says gun buybacks would not be effective “unless massive and coupled with a ban.”     Wayne LaPierre began his speech with a reminder on why he believes it’s so important to counter strict gun control measures

The GOP Star Tennesseans Know Best

The GOP star you've never heard of By: Alexander Burns February 20, 2013 06:07 PM EST You haven't seen a YouTube video of Tennessee Gov ernor " Bill Haslam " berating a constituent at a town hall meeting. You probably haven't watched him on Fox News. In fact, if you search the headlines for his name, you're just as likely to turn up coverage of his brother: Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam. But while attracting scant national attention and eschewing the camera-friendly approach of most up-and-coming Republican governors, Bill Haslam has amassed one of the most extensive conservative governing records in the country. He is, in short, the most important Republican governor you've never heard of. And as the National Governors Association gathers in Washington this week for its winter meeting, the national GOP may have something to learn from Tennessee. Since his election in 2010, Tennessee Governor "Bill Haslam" has ove

How the Drive By Liberal News Media is helping the Obama Lies

How the Drive By Liberal News Media is helping the Obama Lies Liberal Media pushing the Obama Talking Points on Sequester. Dishonest "They're dumb and they're lazy, they're also dishonest." That's how NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell assessed the liberal media's parroting of President Obama's sky-is-falling predictions regarding the pending federal sequester. The media fails to inform the viewers was actually the president's idea, of which he heartily bragged about during his first election run. The $85 billion in cuts amounts to a mere "two percent of the budget," Bozell noted, but in reality, "it's more like $22 billion," in discretionary cuts, which is about 0.25 percent of the budget. "This is just typical fearmongering" from the left, the Media Research Center founder told the audience of the February 22 Hannity .
