NY county: Releasing gun names endangers public

NY county: Releasing gun names endangers public EILEEN A.J. CONNELLY | January 3, 2013 09:41 PM EST | Compare other versions » NEW YORK — A New York county clerk justified his refusal to release the names and addresses of handgun permit holders to a newspaper, saying it would give stalkers and thieves a convenient roadmap to target potential victims – and determine whether they have a gun. "This certainly puts my public in danger," Putnam County Clerk Dennis Sant said Thursday following a news conference in which he was backed by the county executive and other elected officials. The Journal News, which serves New York City's northern suburbs, sparked an outcry last month when it published clickable online maps with the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in Rockland and Westchester counties. When the newspaper requested the same information from Putnam, Sant initially said the county needed more time to fulfill the request. Sant balked en

The popular television and radio host spoke with civil rights attorney Leo Terrell and conservative lawyer Jay Sekulow — two individuals with divergent ideas about how to handle gun ownership. As the men discussed The Journal News’ recent decision to publish the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in two New York Counties, Terrell became to frustrated by Hannity’s questioning that he literally covered his ears and refused to respond. But before this odd behavior took form, the host asked Terrell, who agreed with th

And if you needed an example, look no further than Belleville, Ill., where a battle is brewing between local police officers and a Denny’s Restaurant after an on-duty detective who went inside was told that she either had to leave her firearm in the car or exit the establishment. In addition to voicing outrage at the alleged treatment, the Belleville police chief has since banned officers from eating at the diner. The drama unfolded on New Year’s Day when the detectives were eating at the Denny’s. The restaurant’s manager came over to tell a female in the group that she had to take her gun to the car or leave. Her request was purportedly based on a complaint from another customer. While, at first, the detectives

Marine Writes Letter to Sen. Dianne Feinstein: ‘I will not be disarmed

Blannelberry A letter written by an 8-year Marine veteran to U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, the architect of the comprehensive 2013 Assault Weapons Ban, has gone viral. The author of the letter, Cpl. Joshua Boston who was deployed to Afghanistan between 2004-05, told CNN that he opposes gun registration because it will lead to confiscation. Moreover, that passing more gun control laws will only serve to disarm law-abiding citizens, leaving them defenseless. “I own the guns I own because I acknowledge mankind’s shortcomings instead of pretending like they don’t exist. There are evil men in this world and there just may be a time when I need to do the unthinkable to protect me or my family,” Boston said. Here is the letter Boston wrote, courtesy of CNN’s iReport: Senator Dianne Feinstein, I will not register my weapons should this bill be passed, as I do not believ

House Dems bring back high-capacity ammunition bill

POLITICO.COM 7 Hours Ago House Dems bring back high-capacity ammunition bill by Seung Min Kim Making good on a promise made after the Connecticut elementary school shootings, House Democrats plan to reintroduce a bill on the first day of the new Congress that would ban high-capacity ammunition magazines. The bill would bar the sale or transfer of ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds – which had been the case under the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. The primary sponsors of the legislation are Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), one of the most vocal gun-control advocates on Capitol Hill, and Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.). In the 112th Congress, the bill at 138 co-sponsors, according to McCarthy’s office. “These assault magazines help put the ‘mass’ in ‘mass shooting’ and anything we can do to stop their proliferation will save lives in America,” McCarthy said in a statement Thursday. “These devices are used to kill as many people as possible in the shortest

Firearms groups fight sweeping Illinois gun ban, Dems weigh options

FOX NEWS 2 Hours Ago Firearms groups fight sweeping Illinois gun ban, Dems weigh options National and state firearms groups are fighting back against a pair of sweeping and controversial gun control bills being pushed through the Illinois state legislature during the final days of a lame-duck session. On Wednesday night, a state Senate committee advanced two measures to restrict semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity magazines. It's unclear at this point whether the full Senate will take them up before the new General Assembly class is sworn in Jan. 9, when the process would have to restart. The bills would face an uphill climb in the Senate, particularly as gun groups were mounting a flash campaign against them. FoxNews.com was told late Thursday that Democrats were still trying to line up the votes, after the measures passed on party lines out of committee the night before. The first proposal would ban the possession, delivery, sale and transfer of semiautomatic handgu

the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outnumbers the number of murders committed with a rifle.

According to the FBI annual crime statistics, the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outnumbers the number of murders committed with a rifle. This is an interesting fact, particularly amid the Democrats' feverish push to ban many different rifles, ostensibly to keep us safe of course. However, it appears the zeal of Sens. like Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) is misdirected. For in looking at the FBI numbers from 2005 to 2011, the number of murders by hammers and clubs consistently exceeds the number of murders committed with a rifle. Think about it: In 2005, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 445, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 605. In 2006, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 438, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 618. And so the list goes, with the actual numbers changing somewhat from year to year, yet the fact that more people are killed wi
