What Researchers Learned About Gun Violence Before Congress Killed Funding

TRUTH-OUT.ORG 1 Day Ago What Researchers Learned About Gun Violence Before Congress Killed Funding by Steven Yaccino (Photo: publik16 / flickr) President Obama has directed the Centers for Disease Control to research gun violence as part of his legislative package on gun control. The CDC hasn't pursued this kind of research since 1996 when the National Rifle Association lobbied Congress to cut funding for it, arguing that the studies were politicized and being used to promote gun control. We've interviewed Dr. Mark Rosenberg, who led the agency's gun violence research in the nineties when he was the director of the CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. We talked to Rosenberg about the work the agency was doing before funding was cut and how it's relevant to today's gun control debate. Here's an edited transcript. There's been coverage recently about how Congress cut funding for gun violence research, but not much about what the...

Shooting Victim: “Gun Control Would Not Have Saved Me Or Any Of My Classmates That Day”

POLITICALOUTCAST.COM 9 Hours Ago Shooting Victim: “Gun Control Would Not Have Saved Me Or Any Of My Classmates That Day” by Dave Jolly On January 17, 1989, students arrived at Cleveland Elementary School in Stockton, California like any other day. They sat in their desks listening to the teachers and they ran and played outside on the playground during recess and lunch. During the lunch period, a fire erupted in a van parked behind the school. The fire soon caused the van to explode. The owner of the van, Patrick Purdy, then made his way behind a portable school building. He took aim with his Type 56 assault rifle and opened fire on the kids at the school. In approximately three minutes, Purdy fired 106 rounds, killing five kids and wounding one teacher and thirty more kids. Before police could respond, Purdy took out his handgun and put a bullet into his own head. At the time, it was the worst elementary school shooting in US history. Most of the victims were Cambodian ...

Shame: Oregon Gun-Control Rally Fails Draws Mayor, 20 Other Nut-bags

PAT DOLLARD YOUNG AMERICANS 6 Hours Ago Shame: Oregon Gun-Control Rally Fails Draws Mayor, 20 Other Nut-bags by Jake Hammer Mar 4, 2013Jake Hammer Excerpted from WASHINGTON TIMES: A rally supporting a ban on “assault weapons” in Eugene, Ore., failed to draw the attention of the community Saturday afternoon, with only about 20 people in attendance, including the media. Mayor Kitty Piercy also attended the rally at the Eugene Wayne Morris Free Speech Plaza, which was hosted by Ceasefire Oregon. Baldr Odinson of Ceasefire Oregon spoke about the need for a full ban on semi-automatic “assault rifles” and high-capacity magazines. He also spoke about the need for supporting legislation pending in the state’s Capitol that would outlaw guns that have “no place in the civilian sector,” The Examiner reports. Ceasefire Oregon also supports child-access, gun-safety laws and holds year-round gun buyback programs. The Examiner reports that there was very little enthusiasm in the crowd,...

A misguided stampede by states to push gun laws

GOPUSA 5 Hours Ago A misguided stampede by states to push gun laws In response to the horrific Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, a flurry of laws are being proposed across the nation to keep guns out of the hands of Americans who have been diagnosed with mental disorders and could be dangerous. The New York legislature was first out of the gate when it passed the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act (SAFE) in January. Other states were quick to follow. More than four dozen bills have been proposed in Maryland's legislature alone since the shootings, including one offered by Gov. Martin O'Malley. Let's be thoughtful. These proposals are rushed and are about "doing something," but a more deliberate and effective approach is the one Virginia took after the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007. New York, Maryland bills For example, the SAFE Act requires mental health professionals to tell authorities if they believe a patient is likely to be dange...

On National Rifle Association's News Program, Stronger Gun Laws Could Lead To "Deaths Of Millions" In U.S

MEDIA MATTERS FOR AMERICA 5 Hours Ago On NRA's News Program, Stronger Gun Laws Could Lead To "Deaths Of Millions" In U.S. A member of the National Rifle Association Board of Directors compared states' efforts to strengthen gun violence prevention laws to Nazi Germany on an NRA news program, suggesting that Americans are being disarmed and that "the death of millions" could occur. Ronnie Barrett, the outspoken manufacturer of a controversialarmor-piercing sniper rifle and an NRA board member, made his prediction during the March 1 edition of the NRA's Cam & Company show on Sportsman Channel: BARRETT: In all of history when this kind of stuff has happened before, it's bad news. You know and I hate to be one of these doomsday guys, but in past things like this result in the death of millions. You know, and World War II hasn't been 700 years ago, it's only been 70 years ago. And if people don't think that these things don't h...

GOP Senator Collins to introduce new gun control bill - The Hill's Blog Briefing Room

THEHILL.COM 4 Hours Ago GOP Senator Collins to introduce new gun control bill - The Hill's Blog Briefing Room by Jonathan Easley By Jonathan Easley - 03/04/13 03:34 PM ET Tweet Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) will introduce legislation with Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on Monday aimed at curbing the illegal trafficking of firearms. Collins’s spokesman Kevin Kelley told The Hill in an email that details about the bill were coming “shortly.” It’s unclear how the legislation will differ from Leahy’s previously introduced legislation making it easier for federal law officers to crack down on so-called “straw purchasers.” Leahy’s bill would add a new provision to the criminal code to make it illegal to purchase firearms on behalf of persons who are prohibited from owning them. Federal prosecutors now have little legal basis to file charges against gun traffickers and often must rely on technical paperwork violations to build their cases. The news that Collins is on board with L...

Colorado Senate Meeting to Restrict 2nd Amendment

PATRIOTUPDATE.COM 1 Hour Ago Colorado Senate Meeting to Restrict 2nd Amendment by Jan Morgan Colorado Democrats have gone too far, and the time to stop them is now. On Monday morning the Colorado Senate will take up a package of anti-second amendment measures, four of which have already been passed in the House. It is time for conservatives to take a stand against this assault on our rights. The Democrats in Colorado control both chambers of the legislature and the Governor’s office. They assume that this gives them the right to subvert your constitutional rights. They seek to limit your capability to defend yourself by banning concealed carry on campuses and limiting the capacity of magazines. They intend to make it more difficult to procure a firearm through an expansion of background checks and increased fees, read taxes, on the same. Senate President John Morse has gone so far as to introduce legislation which blatantly contradicts federal law. Morse, with no regard for ...
