In an effort to come out on top in the politically charged gun control debate, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has coined a new term to describe the left's agenda: Gun violence prevention.
Pelosi is pushing the moderate-sounding phrase in order to calm public fears of draconian gun laws, even wholesale confiscation.
“We don’t talk about ‘gun control.’ We talk about ‘gun violence prevention.’ That contains a lot of things, [including] ending the sale of high-capacity assault magazines,” Pelosi said Tuesday, briefing a group of editorial writers. “We are also instructed to say [not] a ban on assault weapons [but] a ban on the sale of assault weapons because the other side then takes it as a confiscation of weapons."
Democrats are old-hands at playing with words to sell policies unpopular with the public. They no longer call themselves liberals, but progressives. Conservatives aren't pro-life, they're anti-choice. Obamacare isn't a tax, it's a mandate. So now Democrats are looking into the sale of assault rifles, not a ban on them. Ban is a dirty word, and Democrats understand that, which is why in order to win this debate, they will stay away from it.
It won't be long before the public will be hearing about 'gun violence prevention' on cable news and reading about it in the newspapers. It's no coincidence that Pelosi made these remarks to members of the media. She was giving them their marching orders. But perhaps that is too harsh a term in the Democratic land of double-speak. Let's say she was just giving them 'suggestions'.
