Lies and elitism plague gun control proponents
by Anthony Martin
Although it is highly premature for gun rights advocates to celebrate the fact that Barack Obama's initiative for gun bans has hit a significant snag in Congress, the proponents of the bans are plagued by lies and elitism that has hurt their cause.
Perhaps the biggest untruth being perpetrated by Obama, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Rep. Steny Hoyer, the mainstream media, and others who are pushing severe restrictions on the Second Amendment is that they "are not seeking to take guns away from citizens."
The goal, so they say, is to ban "military grade assault weapons."
The statement is fragrantly false. It is already illegal for civilians to purchase and possess military grade weapons, and it is already illegal for licensed firearms dealers to sell them.
Military grade assault weapons are fully automatic. That means that by simply squeezing the trigger the gun will spray bullets in a continuous stream, until the shooter lifts his finger from the trigger, or the magazine runs out of bullets.
These guns are not available to civilians. Yet Barack Obama has continually stated that the guns he seeks to ban "do not belong on the streets of America but on the battlefield." Others, particularly in the mainstream media, have chimed in to parrot the false mantra.
Machine guns and other types of automatic firearms are not sold to civilians. Thus, the types of weapons Obama seeks to ban are clearly not "military grade."
Weapons of the semiautomatic variety, such as AR-15s and semiautomatic handguns made by Sig Sauer and Kel-Tec, are not capable of spraying bullets by simply holding the trigger down continuously. The gun owner must squeeze the trigger each time a bullet is fired.
These are the types of weapons Obama and Feinstein wish to ban. And contrary to what both have stated on numerous occasions, the military does not use these guns. Why? Because they are not military grade nor fully automatic.
There is a vast difference between automatic and semiautomatic. One is used by the military and the other is not. One can fire machine-gun style in a spray of bullets. The other cannot. Thus, the gun control proponents are seeking to take away from the citizens a class of firearms that is not designed to do what the gun ban crowd claims. And it is here that gun control proponents, including Obama, Feinstein, Bloomberg, Hoyer, Reid, Schumer, and other Democrats lose all credibility.
But this is not the only problem that plagues the gun ban cabal. A distinct elitism pervades the attitude of those who are proposing these sweeping new gun and ammunition restrictions.
Feinstein's bill, which she introduced in the Senate last week, exempts government personnel from the bans, registration, and controls. Government employees will still be allowed to possess semiautomatic guns and ammunition. Not so with the insignificant peons of the populace.
When asked if he would be willing to give up his security detail, which includes guards armed with semiautomatic weapons, Bloomberg did not answer but everyone knows that mayors, senators, congressmen, movie stars, banks, and others of the elitist ruling class have no intention of abiding by the same restrictions they slap on the general public.
But it went downhill from there. The reporter who asked Mayor Bloomberg the question was then accosted by armed security guards who roughed him up.
The elitist mentality is further seen in the Department of Homeland Security. If semiautomatic weapons and ammunition are so evil for civilians, then why is the department buying up 7,000 of these semiautomatic rifles? Widespread reports circulated last year that the department had also purchased multithousands of rounds of hollow point bullets.
