McConnell Vows Opposition to Obama’s Gun Control Plan
by Dan Weil
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who is up for re-election in 2014, has sent a telephone recording to gun owners in his state of Kentucky, vowing to fight against President Barack Obama’s gun control proposals.
Those include a ban on the sale of assault-style rifles and gun magazines with more than 10 rounds, and a requirement that every gun buyer pass a background check.
"President Obama and his team are doing everything in their power to restrict your Constitutional right to keep and bear arms," McConnell said in the recording, USA Today reports. "Their efforts to restrict your rights, invading your personal privacy and overstepping their bounds with executive orders, is just plain wrong."
The call was directed to several hundred-thousand gun owners and hunters across the state, said Jesse Benton, McConnell's campaign manager.
"Know that I will be doing everything in my power as Senate Republican leader, fighting tooth and nail, to protect your Second Amendment rights, so that law-abiding citizens such as yourself can properly and adequately protect yourself, your family, and your country," McConnell said in his message.
In a poll conducted Jan. 7-10 by Gallup, 43 percent of Americans said they are satisfied with current gun control laws, 38 percent said they favor stricter laws, and 5 percent said they want looser laws.
