The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart rips the Right for dancing around gun control debate
by Sarah Muller
The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart holding a plastic gun on Tuesday’s show.
Daily Show host Jon Stewart railed against opposition to address the gun control debate in a meaningful way. He declared the time to talk about guns is now.
“Finally, everyone from the NRA to the Marin County Kumbaya Patrol, is ready to talk about gun violence – although, to be fair, the Kumbaya Patrol has been ready for quite time now,” he said on Tuesday’s show.
The Comedy Central host slammed right-wing conservatives for blaming “non-gun causes of gun violence” in the aftermath of such shootings as the recent massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; he showed clips of gun advocacy pundits blaming video games, Hollywood and even personal sinning instead of discussing ways of tackling the issue head on.
He compared the gun control issue to the drunk driving incidents, arguing based on the successful decline of these deadly vehicular incidents, the same improvements can be done for gun violence through tighter and better enforcement of laws.
To Stewart, the root of the problem comes down to Americans being afraid the government will take away their firearms, noting Alex Jones’ epic pro-gun rant.
“Now I see what’s happening,” Stewart said. “So this is what it is. Their paranoid fear of a possible dystopic future prevents us from addressing our actual dystopic present.”
