VESTAL — Police were still searching late Thursday for a man who forced his way into a South Jensen Road home Wednesday afternoon, holding a mother of two at knifepoint.
When contacted for an update, Vestal police Sgt. Christopher Streno said investigators had nothing to add to the media report on the incident issued earlier Thursday.
The unknown man rang the doorbell at 128 S. Jensen Road around 2:50 p.m. A woman was home caring for two children, ages 1 and 2, police said.
After the incident, the woman fled with her children to a neighbor’s house and called 911. No one was injured, but as a precaution, the woman was examined at a local hospital, police said.
The man is described as white, approximately 50 years old with short to medium length dark hair that contained a lot of gray, scruffy facial hair and discolored teeth, police said. He was reportedly wearing blue jeans and a thicker flannel or plaid shirt over a T-shirt.
During the incident, the man brandished what was described as a kitchen or chef’s knife.
Witnesses in the neighborhood reported seeing a man matching the description before and after the incident.
Vestal police are asking the public for help. If you were in the area and may have seen or spoken to this person or know him, call detectives at (607) 754-2477 ext. 347. Calls may be kept confidential.
Police also remind residents to practice basic crime prevention strategies at home: lock doors even when you’re home, don’t open doors for strangers, and report any suspicious people, vehicles or activity to police by calling (607) 754-2111.
Vestal police were assisted by New York State Police and a K-9 unit from Johnson City. The state police Forensic Identification Unit assisted with the processing of the crime scene.
