Statewide opposition grows against Governor Cuomo's gun control law

Oswego County has become the latest to voice opposition to Governor Cuomo's gun control law, the SAFE Act.

County legislators, led by Legislator Terry Wilbur (R-Hannibal) want to go on the record in opposition to the SAFE Act.

The Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act of 2013 is the most restrictive gun control law in the country. It was signed into law on 15 January presumably in response to the horrific shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

Wilbur believes the law is unconstitutional and that it “We want to have a voice at the table, a voice that wasn’t allowed because they took that message of necessity and crammed it right through,” Wilbur said in an interview with WSYR TV. He also believes the law is unconstitutional and “unfairly targets law abiding citizens” (http://bit.ly/121ozuv).

Oswego County now joins Ulster County in ther opposition to the NY Governor's SAFE Act. Yesterday, Ulster passed a lengthy resolution supporting the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and calling for a repeal of the SAFE Act (http://exm.nr/Wxjyeu).

Ulster County sent their resolution not only to the Governor, but also to President Obama and Vice President Biden. This action was taken for that county to go on record in opposition of the president's executive orders and other Federal gun control initiatives.

Nationwide, there are 288 county sheriffs and sheriffs' associations that have publically stated they will neither support nor enforce new Federal gun restrictions within their jurisdictions.

Gun contorl opponents are planning a "2nd Amendment Rally", supported in part by the National Rifle Association in Albany at noon on 28 February (http://exm.nr/UQakJl).

The Oswego County resolution was discussed in a legislature committee meeting today at 1:30 p.m. in the county office building.
