A man was changing his baby’s diaper in a minivan when both were shot on a Woodlawn street, about 10 minutes after they left a visiting the child’s grandmother.

The baby’s father, intially identified as Jonathan Watkins, was standing outside a beige Chevy Venture minivan in the 6500 block of South Maryland and was changing his 6-month-old’s diaper who was in the front passenger seat, when a gunman came up from a gangway and opened fire, police said.

The gunman ran across a vacant lot and hopped into a blue conversion van.

The father suffered a graze wound across his cheek, was shot in the left side and in the buttocks, police said, and the baby, Jonylah, was shot as well.

“There’s too much shooting over there,” Mary Young, the child’s grandmother, told reporters at Comer’s Children Hospital. Young had seen the victims only minutes before the shooting.

“The baby is in surgery. She’s none but 6 months old. How could anybody — what kind of heart?” she said, before becoming overcome with emotion and being led away

Watkins was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

He had married the girl’s mother about a month ago, and the mother had been shot in the knee while carrying the baby, family members said.

Dominique Young, 21, the baby’s aunt, said she was walking her son to school nearby when she heard 10 quick, uninteruppted shots ring out.

“They were big gun shots...10 shots...very close,” she said.

Police are investigating whether the shooting may have been prompted by an angry post on Facebook, a source told the Sun-Times.

No one was in custody.
