O'Malley's Gun Control Law Passes Senate In Maryland

O'Malley's Gun Control Law Passes Senate In Maryland
by Tim Brown
Thursday, after ten hours of vigorous debate, the Maryland State Senate voted on and passed, 28-19, Governor Martin O’Malley’s gun control bill the will ban certain semi-automatic weapons, require gun owners and new purchasers of firearms to get fingerprinted, take eight hours of classroom study, and pay for a more extensive background check. Also, no magazines will be able to be purchased that hold more than ten rounds and will also put limits on gun ownership for citizens committed against their will for mental health treatment.

Twelve Republicans and a few Democrats voted against the bill. Next week the bill is set to be debated before the House, but its passage there is nearly certain.

Following the Senate’s passing of the bill, the Maryland Governor dismissed criticism from Republicans and Democrats that opposed the bill because they claimed that it tramples upon the Second Amendment. He didn’t deny that it does that. Rather, he appealed to the fact that he has broad public support for the measure.

“It is a common-sense licensing requirement,” O’Malley said. “If you have to get a license to drive a car in Maryland . . . you should have to be licensed in order to operate a firearm.”

Back in January O’Malley, put forth an Obama/Feinstein sounding statement as he introduced “public safety priorities” for the 2013 Legislative Session. “Progress is a choice. So long as gun violence continues to take the lives of our fellow Marylanders, there are choices we must make together to protect our children, our families and law enforcement personnel who put themselves in harm’s way every day,” said Governor O’Malley. “Today, we’re putting forward a comprehensive set of public safety initiatives that will improve the safety at our schools, make meaningful mental health reforms, and enact common-sense gun safety measures like banning military-style assault weapons and limiting high-capacity magazines.”

O’Malley has received many pats on the back from liberals who claim they are after safety, but in doing so violate the law of the land, the U.S. Constitution, by pushing for more gun control legislation.

Interestingly enough, Bob Adelmann at The New American believes that this is more about O’Malley’s political future than gun control and he makes some good observations. Adelmann writes:

What’s really happening in Maryland has little to do with controlling crime but possibly everything to do with O’Malley. The Baltimore Sun exulted that the bill passed by the senate contained the licensing provision which is “the centerpiece” of the governor’s bill and the one they believe would be most effective in reducing gun violence. Instead, it looks as if passage will be most effective in promoting O’Malley’s run for the presidency in 2016.

The governor got involved in left-wing causes while still in college, working with Gary Hart’s presidential campaign for president in 1984. From there he worked as state field director of then-congresswoman Barbara Mikulski (now Maryland’s senior senator), and then took a position in her office as a “legislative fellow.” In 2004, O’Malley spoke at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in support of John Kerry’s campaign for president against President George W. Bush. In August 2005, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Business Week magazine touted O’Malley as one of the “new stars” in the Democrat Party galaxy, along with then-Senator Ken Salazar, then-Senator Barack Obama, and then-Representative Rahm Emanuel. The only one not eventually involved intimately in the Obama administration was Martin O’Malley.

O’Malley is term-limited in 2014, which gives him a full two years to explore a presidential run in 2016. Passage of this signature piece of legislation, supported by nothing more than rhetoric, will add to his perceived credibility among those on the Left. O’Malley has often referred to his success in reducing crime while he was mayor of Baltimore from 1999 to 2007, claiming that under his administration crime dropped by nearly 40 percent. The fact that he could never prove where that statistic came from, nor could anyone else, doesn’t matter.

Additionally, what will gun maker Beretta do? They have been contemplating the issue of leaving Maryland, even threatening Maryland lawmakers by declaring “Enact such measures at your own risk.” To lose that company would be an impact upon their economy and jobs.

Personally, I think both the Federal government and the State governments have underestimated the people. Dr. Gary North writes, “The Second Amendment crowd is large and growing. It is getting far more hard core. The anti-gun politicians, including Obama, would be wise to re-read their worn copies of Saul Alinsky’s book, Rules for Radicals. They have forgotten Alinsky’s operating principle: The action is the reaction. The action is anti-gun legislation. The reaction is a nation-wide rush to buy guns and ammo.”

Unless the people of Maryland stand up and contact their representatives and demand that they vote against this legislation, Maryland will no longer be able to hold the motto “The Free State.” For once this is implemented, you will cease to have the means to do as the Second Amendment states and that is to secure a free state. Let me ask you Maryland citizens, are you willing to let men in your State government trample over your rights, yea, your God given duty to defend, what is in essence, your country for the sake of his political career? I sure hope not.

Here’s your representatives contact information. Stand up and fight for what is right!
