House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday sounded optimistic notes about two major legislative priorities on Capitol Hill.

The California Democrat joined NewsHour's Judy Woodruff for a wide-ranging interview about budget matters, politics and presidential authority. Woodruff continued the conversation online to ask about immigration reform and gun control.

She sees the best chance for background check legislation, but also sees bipartisan support for gun trafficking measures and efforts to increase mental health funding.

Pelosi said she's note sure "what will be possible" in the Senate, but that she would "hope and pray ... it will be the boldest common denominator."

"On immigration I'm even more hopeful," Pelosi told Woodruff. She said Democrats working with Republicans on a comprehensive plan that would include a pathway to citizenship for the millions of illegal immigrants in the United States are in good spirits.

Pelosi also offered unusual praise for former President George W. Bush on the immigration issue. She said "nobody was better" on fighting for a comprehensive plan, but that his own Republican party let him down. "He has a legacy," Pelosi said. "He had it in his heart and he had it in his head."

It includes decades-old footage of National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre saying the gun lobby group approves of the checks. LaPierre recently testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that the NRA no longer supports background checks for all gun sales. A Bloomsberg spokesman would say only that the ad cost in the six-figure range....
