White House spokesman Jay Carney on Monday called on senators not to filibuster gun control legislation, which is on the Senate floor this week.
“It is incumbent on the senators to allow a vote”
“It is incumbent on the senators to allow a vote,” Carney told reporters during his briefing.
Democrats received the necessary 60 votes to begin debate late last week, but will need 60 votes to end debate and proceed to an up-or-down vote after amendments.
Carney said President Obama is in contact with lawmakers and will continue to be engaged on Capitol Hill. “You can be sure that he is engaged on this,” he said.
He noted that Obama wanted a broader universal background check proposal but called the Manchin-Toomey compromise “welcome and significant bipartisan progress” which would “save lives.”
