According to the Los Angeles Times, two undercover Los Angeles Police Department detectives were wounded Tuesday morning in an ambush outside the LAPD's Wilshire Division station.  The detectives will remain unidentified.  They were waiting to enter the station on Venice Boulevard at about 4:30 a.m. local time.  The detectives were members of the Wilshire Burglary Task Force.  A gunman, who had been lying in wait, opened fire just after detectives used a key card to gain access to the driveway area.  The police vehicle was struck by bullets multiple times.

While both detectives were hurt, the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.  One detective had a graze wound to the head and the other to the hand.  KTLA-TV reports that Commander Andy Smith advised that both detectives were treated and released from a local hospital.  One officer was a 20-year veteran and the other had 11 years on the job, Smith reported.

Police have not yet determined a motive.  Authorities shut down intersections in the Wilshire area while looking for a suspect.  Approximately 200 officers and 4 K-9 teams are canvassing the 25-block area around the Wilshire station.

At least one suspect, who police said fled the scene on foot in a southwesterly direction, was outstanding, officials said. He is described as a black male, 30 to 35 years old with a medium build and facial hair, wearing all black clothing,

Commander Smith advised that Police detained four people for questioning, three of whom were later cleared and released. Reporters observed snipers positioned on the Wilshire Station's roof.  Many Wilshire neighborhood streets remain closed well into the day. The city was placed on tactical alert following the shooting.

The New York Daily News reported Commander Smith commenting as follows:  "Anybody who's willing to do this and take on two armed police officers outside of a police station is obviously a very dangerous person," Smith said. "We want to do everything we can to get this individual in custody so we can keep our community safe,"

Senators now have two days to read and digest it before a Wednesday vote. Sen.
