Chicago's Bloody Weekend: 7 Dead, 30 Wounded in Rash of Shootings
Seven people were killed and at least 30 wounded in Chicago gun violence over Father's Day weekend, WMAQ-TV reports.
Six of the fatal shootings and 11 others happened overnight Saturday, the station reports.
One of the deaths involved a 16-year-old boy who police say had gang affiliations. He was shot while riding a bike about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, police said; he tried to flee but collapsed a short distance from where he was hit.
He was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center at 1:37 a.m. with gunshot wounds to the left arm and back, police said, and later identified as Kevin Rivera of the 1500 block of North Keystone Avenue. No one has been arrested in connection with what police are calling a homicide.
In other violence, an 18-year-old man was hit in the head, chest, and shoulder in a drive-by shooting that also injured a 22-year-old woman in the thigh about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, police said.
Just after midnight Sunday someone opened fire in a nightclub, killing one man and injuring three others. No one was in custody for the shooting as of Sunday morning, police said.
Around 1:15 a.m. Sunday, WMAQ-TV reports that a 19-year-old man was found by police bleeding from the chest, stomach, and shoulder; identified as Jamal Jones of the 8800 block of South Yale Avenue, he was later pronounced dead at Christ Hospital.
Minutes after, a man was killed and a woman was wounded on the city's West Side, police said.
Less than an hour later, a police-involved shooting killed one man in the Lawndale neighborhood. WMAQ-TV reports that officers attempted to pull a car over several times when the passenger jumped out and started running in the 1600 block of South Springfield Avenue around 2:30 a.m.
Police chased him down an alley when they noticed a gun in his belt, and when he allegedly reached for it, police opened fire. No officers were injured in the incident.
The weekend's first killing happened about 11:30p.m. Friday when two men were shot during a "dispute," officials said. One man, 24, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, WMAQ-TV reports. The other man, 23, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with a stomach wound. His condition was not immediately known.
The most-recent shooting occurred at 4:10 a.m. when a 34-year-old man was shot in the head, back, and leg, WMAQ-TV reports.
