Fwd: News from Windham Weaponry, Inc.

June Masthead
Welcome to The Windham Weaponry Newsletter - Vol. 2 / Issue 6
June 2013

With June already upon us, we should stop for a moment and take "stock" of our year's progress so far (may be an intended pun there!). Were the first five months crazy? Yes. Are we making inroads into fulfilling the backlog of orders we have? Absolutely. Windham Weaponry rifles have been built in record numbers for the past couple months - in both our Windham, Maine and Phoenix, Arizona facilities.

We've also been able to fulfill a number of the Test and Evaluation requests we've had from various firearms publications and websites. This means that you'll be able to read more about your favorite Windham models in the pages of Guns & Ammo, On Target, Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement, Shooting Times, Shotgun News, Soldier of Fortune, and other great firearms publications. We'll try to post notice of these reviews on our website as soon as they're published.

As always, your feedback is welcome - feel free to send us photos of how you enjoy your Windham Weaponry rifle. We would love to hear from you. Please contact us through www.windhamweaponry.com or newsletter@windhamweaponry.com

TOPIC: Our Thoughts on Steel Cased Ammunition

Pretty much daily I get the question "Is it okay to shoot steel cased ammo in my Windham Weaponry AR15?"

With ammunition in short supply and good ammo priced very high, many people are buying cheaper steel cased, bi-metal jacket ammunition from Wolf, TulAmmo, Herter's, etc.

While I don't generally recommend steel cased ammo, it's not going to hurt your rifle in limited amounts. If used exclusively however it will reduce the barrel life by about 4,000-5,000 rounds. Most if not all of this ammo uses a copper coated steel jacketed "bi-metal" bullet which increases wear on the barrel. In testing done by LuckyGunner Labs, rifles using Federal brass cased ammo were still shooting decent groups up to 10,000 rounds. With steel cased ammo the groups were all over the place at 6,000 rounds with many bullets tumbling and key holing.

The other problem with steel cased ammo is that the cases don't expand the same way that brass cases do. This causes carbon build up between the case and the chamber wall. This build up can cause stuck cases. Sometimes these cases will stick so severely that it is difficult to remove them even with a cleaning rod. It is even worse if you fire a bunch of steel cased ammo then fire brass cased right behind it in a dirty chamber. Then the brass case expanding normally really sticks to the carbon left behind in the chamber.

So if you are going to use steel cased ammo I recommend breaking the rifle in with decent brass cased ammo first. Up to 100 rounds, the more the better. Another problem with steel cased ammo is a lot of it seems to be somewhat underpowered which can cause short stroking issues. If the gun is broken in first with brass cased ammo this helps seal the gas system somewhat which will make the lower powered steel cased ammo work a bit better. Also, make sure to keep your chamber clean. Keep in mind that it is going to foul pretty quickly with steel cased ammo.

Here are two excellent articles regarding the issues with steel cased ammunition that I always recommend. One of them is the excellent LuckyGunner test.

This month's question is:

I'd like to change the stock on my Windham Weaponry rifle.  Does it have a commercial spec. buffer tube or mil. spec. buffer tube?

Answer:

Windham Weaponry Rifles are shipped with commercial spec. buffer tubes. The differences are shown in these photos:

Hello W.W. I was pleased to read your newsletter. I always look forward to see whats going on in that neck of the woods. I always enjoy Erik's tech explanations of things we can learn about doing small procedures to our AR rifles. It would be nice to be that capable and understand all he does about this great weapon. I was interested to see you add the carbon series to your line. I bought a carbon pistol from Bushmaster when they were still in Windham. They had that part of the operation in Lake Havasu Arizona then. I can't wait to see what your version looks like. I had Erik do some work on my carbon upper a few months ago. Glad everything is going well, keep up the good work. God bless our great country!

Around February of this year I bought your MRC AR-15 at a local gun shop on the word of a friend who worked there. After looking the rifle over (it looked great!) I decided to spend my hard earned money on it. I am extremely satisfied so far. On the first trip to the range, I had the gun hitting bulls-eye at 100 yards, in less than 15 shots. After that, I put the gun through its paces, and it shot flawlessly.  On the next trip to the range I was shooting with a large group of people around, again at 100 yards, there were probably 6-8 other ARs on the firing line. During the first target check, we all went down range and looked at our groups. There was particular interest in mine, since I was the only one of the line shooting through iron sights only. Looking around, I saw more than a few impressed looks. My grouping was identical to some that were shooting with multiplier optics.  Then the obvious question came, "what manufacture are you shooting?" After telling them I had a Windham Weapons firearm, there was a little confusion, luckily I had brought the paperwork that came with my rifle and I let them read on it.

This was long-winded I know, but I would just like to say thank you for producing such a quality rifle, it is a joy to take to the range, every time!

Daniel K.

What's New in LE?

With June upon us, things in Law Enforcement here at Windham Weaponry have not slowed at all. We now have available for Law Enforcement two rifles that are compliant and are meeting the demands of departments and officers around the country.

We have the R14M4PHA4T-7 and the R14M4EXA4T-7. Each of these rifles comes in a 14.5" barrel length with a pinned/welded flash hider. The R14M4PHA4T-7 has a pinned/welded Phantom 5C2 flash hider and the R14M4EXA4T-7 has a pinned/welded Extended A2 flash hider. Each of these rifles is legal in barrel length because the flash hiders are pinned/welded so they will not require any special permits from ATF. The barrels have 1 X 7" twist rifling.

MPC 14 w Ext Birdcage

The Windham Weaponry Law Enforcement Sales team will be at the Police Security Expo to be held in Atlantic City on June 25 and 26. If you are in the area, I would love to have you stop by and check out some of the exciting products. We will be in Booth 1241.
