Ohio Based Gun Rights Group Raises Over $12,000 for Zimmerman to Buy Guns, Security
The Buckeye Firearms Foundation, one of the largest gun rights groups in Ohio, has raised over $12,000 for George Zimmerman to purchase new firearms, security, or for legal costs.
The gun rights group started the drive earlier this week and quickly got to the $12,000 mark, despite a cyber attack that took their website offline.
George Zimmerman was supposed to get the Kel Tec PF9 9mm handgun that killed Trayvon Martin back following his acquittal in a murder trial, but the US Justice Department seized the gun as well as other evidence from the trial as part of a civil rights investigation.
According to Fox News Latino, there are a variety of ways the funds, expected to be delivered to Zimmerman next week, could be spent,
Zimmerman's spokesman, Shawn Vincent, said before his acquittal all donations he received were deposited into a fund dedicated to pay for his legal defense costs and fees and managed by an independent administrator. He said the Ohio foundation's check could be allocated similarly.
Vincent would not say what the donations to the fund have amounted to. But he said they have exceeded the $120,000 that Zimmerman's attorneys had said was needed to put on a good defense before the trial started in May. The fund had raised almost $315,000 in January.
Zimmerman was acquitted of both murder and manslaughter in the 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin over 2 weeks ago by an all female jury in Florida. The acquittal has sparked national protests, some turning violent.
One juror said that Florida law prevented the jury from convicting Zimmerman of any crimes and said she felt he "got away with murder."
Trayvon Martin's mother said she blames Florida's laws for her son's death.
