House Issues Subpoenas To Get Benghazi Documents From State Department

Accusing the State Department of stonewalling, House investigators issued subpoenas Thursday to force the Obama administration to turn over documents that the Republicans said would shed light on the internal review that looked at the attack in Benghazi, Libya, last year.
One subpoena calls for the State Department to turn over the records it shared with its own internal Accountability Review Board, which the GOP argues did not do enough to hold high-ranking officials responsible for the four Americans who died in the Sept. 11 attacks on the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi.
The other subpoena orders the administration to leave 25,000 pages of documents with the oversight committee. Currently, those documents are carted into Congress each day and then carted out at night in order to prevent lawmakers from having physical custody, House investigators said.
"State Department tactics to delay and impede accountability have exhausted the committee's patience," said Rep. Darrell Issa, California Republican and chairman of the oversight committee, who warned that further subpoenas could be coming down the road.
Four State Department officials were given administrative punishments for their role in the failure to have strong enough security at the diplomatic post, which was attacked by terrorists the night of Sept. 11.
The Obama administration first said the attack was by an angry mob, incensed at an anti-Islamic video, but later acknowledged it was a coordinated terrorist assault.
