The government is partially shut down and is nearing default, yet President Barack Obama still found time recently to film a last-minute campaign video in support of Cory Booker's campaign for the U.S. Senate.

The Democratic Senate nominee in New Jersey released the video with Obama's message on Monday. In the ad, Obama calls on voters to turn out for the Newark mayor.

"On Wednesday, voters in New Jersey have the opportunity to vote for a leader with uncommon character: Cory Booker," Obama said.

Booker and Republican Steve Lonegan will face off Wednesday for the special election to finish the term of Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who died earlier this year.

Obama used the campaign ad to decry the "shutdown politics we've seen in Washington," even though is Republican critics accuse the president of not being willing to negotiate with them on budget issues.

"New Jersey also has the opportunity to send a message to the entire country about what kind of leadership we expect from our representative in Congress, that we're better than the shutdown politics we've seen in Washington," Obama said.

The video looks as if it could have been filmed in the White House, though spokesmen for Booker and the Obama administration did not immediately return requests for comment from The Daily Caller on Monday seeking more details about it.

Obama has filmed campaign ads for himself at the White House before.

Polls indicate that Booker is still the favorite over Lonegan, though the race has tightened in recent weeks. A Monmouth University Poll released Monday has Booker at 52 percent to Lonegan's 42 percent.

PAT DOLLARD YOUNG AMERICANS 11 Hours Ago Bloomberg to Air Gun Control Ad During Superbowl Feb 2, 2013Toro520 Via The Associated Press: NEW YORK (Associated Press) – A gun control group founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is airing a Super Bowl advertisement calling for background checks. The 30-second spot by Mayors Against Illegal Guns will air in the Washington area during the game between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. The ad calls on lawmakers to pass rules requiring background checks on guns. It is narrated by children, with “America the Beautiful” playing in the background. It includes decades-old footage of National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre saying the gun lobby group approves of the checks. LaPierre recently testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that the NRA no longer supports background checks for all gun sales. A Bloomsberg spokesman would say only that the ad cost in the six-figure range....
