High School Athlete Denied State Championship Bid Due to Strong Christian Convictions
Codie Thacker, a junior at Whitley County High School in Kentucky, is a driven distance runner. She trains year round, and one of her ultimate running goals is to qualify for the Kentucky Cross-Country State Championship Meet. She fell short of doing so her freshman and sophomore years, but this year, she felt that she was prepared.
However, Thacker is also a devout Christian. What's the problem in that? The problem does not lie in her Christian convictions, but with with the race bib number she was expected to wear in the Regional Cross-Country championship meet- the qualifying race for the state championship. That number? 666!
Thacker and her coach pleaded with race officials to change her number but they refused. Thacker claims she was adamant about her Christian convictions and of how she did not want even her name associated with that number, which historically is related to Satan. Race officials continued to deny the request to change the number, in spite of it being a religious preference, and Thacker did not participate in the race, missing her chance to go to states for a third straight year.
