FOUNDER'S QUOTE DAILY

"No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders." --Samuel Adams, Letter to James Warren, November 4, 1775

TODAY'S 'TOP TEN' FROM RIGHT HOOK

You Got Good Ideas

Obama launched a three week dog and pony show to re-promote the re-launch of ObamaCare. At his first stop, he told his fawning admirers, "Do not let the initial problems with the website discourage you. We've learned not to make wild promises... The bottom line is this law is working and will work into the future. You got good ideas, bring them to me, let's go, but we're not repealing it as long as I'm president. We will make it work. I'm going to need some help in spreading the word." Indeed, Obama has made some "wild promises" to sell this behemoth socialist boondoggle. Here's a "good idea": STOP LYING!

Now That It's 'Fixed'...

Ahead of the 50-90 million insurance cancellations coming next year, the more than five million Americans already cancelled because of ObamaCare are likely going to face a lapse in insurance coverage, even if they do think they have secured an exchange policy. According to The New York Times, though Obama is patting himself on the back, claiming that O'Care made its deadline to get the website on track, there is an enormous short circuit in the information being transmitted from the federal exchange to insurance companies. Turns out that many folks who think they successfully bought a policy through the exchange are likely not in the system, or their information is badly compromised. The Washington Post estimates that more than 30 percent of applicant insurance claims have significant errors, including "failure to notify insurers about new customers, duplicate enrollments or cancellation notices for the same person, incorrect information about family members, and mistakes involving federal subsidies."

About That 5.5 Million

Ahead of the tens of millions of insurance policies subject to cancellation after the new year, we should note that the current focus on the 5.5 million policies already cancelled does not tell the whole story. Many of those policies cover dependents, which is to say the actual number of citizens losing their coverage is 10-15 million.

O'Care ID Theft Vulnerability

We previously reported that Health and Human Services (HHS) failed to safeguard Healthcare.gov after having three years (and hundreds of millions of dollars) to make the system secure -- a debacle security expert John McAfee described as "a catastrophic failure." And despite Obama's "fixed it" announcement, other experts are warning that the site might be more vulnerable now than it was before. David Kennedy, CEO of the online security firm TrustedSec, says it may take "over a year to at least address some of the critical-to-high exposures on the website itself." And Morgan Wright, CEO of Crowd Sourced Investigations, explains, "There's not a plan to fix this that meets the sniff test of being reasonable." Not exactly mission accomplished...

Closing in on IRS Scandal?

IRS Chief Council William Wilkins is being summoned back to Capitol Hill following his rather obscure testimony in November concerning the IRS targeting of conservative groups. He responded "I don't recall" 80 times during the session. Representatives Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Jim Jordan (R-OH), in a letter to Mr. Wilkins, note, "[This] suggests either a deliberate attempt to obfuscate your involvement in this matter or gross incompetence on your part." Many probably aren't familiar with Wilkins. "He's one of only two Obama appointees at the IRS," explains Gary Bauer. "And not surprisingly, there is a big Obama connection. According to the Wall Street Journal, 'Wilkins helped lead the defense of Chicago Reverend Jeremiah Wright's United Church of Christ when the IRS investigated then Senator Barack Obama's involvement with the church...'" We're sure there's nothing to see here, either.

Joe Biden in Charge?

Tensions between Japan and China continue to escalate following China's provocative move to implement an "air defense identification zone" over disputed islands in the East China Sea. So, naturally, Barack Obama sent our best and brightest to Beijing to soften the situation (or inflame it). This quarrel isn't the only issue at play for Joe Biden, as The Wall Street Journal's Gerard Baker notes: "[T]he U.S. has privately told South Korea that its new plan to use Chinese telecom firm Huawei could lead to communication lines becoming less secure. Remember: the Pentagon has accused China of hacking American computer networks. Meanwhile, we find that China's efforts to gain influence in the world economy might be paying off: The yuan recently overtook the euro and the yen to become the second-most used currency in trade finance after the dollar."

Bankrupting Detroit

As we reported in Wednesday's Digest, Judge Steven Rhodes is allowing Detroit's bankruptcy to proceed. The city's population plummeted after more than 50 years of Democrat rule. (Indeed, if Barack Obama had a city, it would look like Detroit.) Public unions will never willingly agree to truly reasonable terms, but Rhodes' ruling does mean they have to share the burden of the city's financial trouble. It will indeed be a good development if unions are forced to live in reality.

The Plastic Gun Ban

The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved an extension to the ban on plastic guns Tuesday for an additional 10 years. We don't oppose legislation that would prevent guns going through security check points without being visible to security, though the likelihood of this is minimal. However, we also note that anyone looking to commit violence in an airport or anywhere else does not need to walk in with a high-capacity semi-auto weapon. They only need to be able to disable someone on the other side of security who is carrying such a weapon -- as was the case at the Navy Yard.

Trillion Dollar Coin

According to information obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request made by the Huffington Post, Barack Obama seriously considered the idea of minting a trillion dollar coin to "pay" the way for him to unilaterally increase the U.S. debt ceiling. A 1996 law supposedly empowers the Treasury to mint a platinum coin of any denomination, which could then be used to meet government obligations even if Congress refused to raise the debt ceiling. Evidently, Obama was serious enough about the idea that he had the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel draft memos providing legal justification. Our only question is why stop at $1 trillion? Why not just pay off the debt with a $17 trillion coin?

Trust Me!

Bill Clinton attempted to recast his criticism of O'Care a few weeks back, now claiming: "I was trying to be supportive of it… I don't think you can find anybody in America who has worked harder for [Obama's] re-election or supported this bill or went out of his way to explain the bill to the American people more than I did." Yes, nobody more than Bill! Of course, Obama long ago surpassed Clinton in the BIG lie department.
