Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam Merry Christmas and happy New Year

This Holiday Season

The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas have gone by in the blink of an eye, and a year can feel the same way.

The annual lighting of the Capitol Christmas tree and lighting of the Capitol menorah signal the start of the holiday season and a wind-down of the year on Capitol Hill.

We’ve put together an interactive timeline to capture some of the key events of 2013.

As we look ahead to 2014, I am proud of the work we’ve done on a variety of issues including education – both K-12 and higher education, new jobs, running the state like a business, and promoting healthy behaviors.

In the New Year, I will continue to focus on these priorities and will put an especially strong emphasis on our “Drive to 55” effort to encourage more Tennesseans to earn a certificate or degree beyond high school.  We want more Tennesseans getting high-quality, good paying Tennessee jobs.

Thank you for your interest and support.  Crissy and I wish you a safe and happy holiday season.

Merry Christmas and happy New Year,

– Bill

The 30-second spot by Mayors Against Illegal Guns will air in the Washington area during the game between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. The ad calls on lawmakers to pass rules requiring background checks on guns. It is narrated by children, with “America the Beautiful” playing in the background. It includes decades-old footage of National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre saying the gun lobby group approves of the checks. LaPierre recently testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that the NRA no longer supports background checks for all gun sales. A Bloomsberg spokesman would say only that the ad cost in the six-figure range....
