Tennessee: Governor Signs Hunter Protection Bill; Senate and House to Consider Pro-Gun Legislation

On April 4, Governor Bill Haslam (R) signed Senate Bill 1777 into law.  Supported by the NRA, SB 1777 would amend Tennessee's current hunter harassment laws by prohibiting anti-hunting radicals from using drones to interfere with those lawfully hunting or fishing.  Sponsored by state Senator Mike Bell (R-9) and state Representative Judd Matheny (R-47), SB 1777 protects the rights and safety of hunters while afield.  The use of drones by anti-hunting extremists, with the expressed intention of spooking wildlife or catching a hunter off-guard, is extremely dangerous and could potentially result in injury.  This law will take effecton July 1, 2014.

House Bill 1480, sponsored by state Representative Jeremy Faison (R-11), passed in the House Finance, Ways and Means Committee today by a voice vote and has been referred to the House Calendar and Rules Committee to be scheduled for a vote on the House floor.  Tomorrow, the state Senate is scheduled to consider HB 1480's Senate companion, Senate Bill 1774, sponsored by state Senator Mike Bell (R-9).  HB 1480 and SB 1774 would allow a law-abiding gun owner to carry a firearm in his or her own vehicle without a HCP.

Senate Bill 1612, originally scheduled for consideration on the state Senate floor today, has been rescheduled for tomorrow.  Sponsored by state Senator Mark Green (R-22), SB 1612 would strengthen the state firearms preemption statute by giving all authority relating to firearms laws and regulations to the General Assembly, with the exception of firearms discharge.  Its House companion, House Bill 1399 sponsored by state Representative Judd Matheny (R-47), has been scheduled for a vote on the House floor tomorrow.

Please contact your state Representative and respectfully urge him or her to vote "YES" on HB 1399 and HB 1480.  Contact information for your state Representative can be found here.

Please contact your state Senator and ask him or her to vote for SB 1774 and SB 1612.  Contact information for your state Senator can be found here.
