In 1775, on the eve of Revolution, the First Continental Congress called for "a day of publick humiliation, fasting, and prayer." Indeed, our Founders saw a national day of prayer as a fitting observance. In 1952, Congress established the National Day of Prayer as an annual event by a joint resolution, signed into law by President Harry Truman. The NDP designation (36 U.S.C. § 119) calls for the nation "to turn to God in prayer and meditation." Prayer is Almighty God's prerequisite for true hope and change, and our nation needs an abundance of both right now. TOP 5 RIGHT HOOKS Carney Lies to Cover BIG Lie When the Benghazi Bombshell dropped this week, it sent the White House scrambling to cover up the cover-up of the cover-up. Long story short, a post-attack email from national security team member Ben Rhodes to then-UN ambassador Susan Rice and others laid out the goal: "to underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy." White House Propaganda Minister Jay Carney then had the stones to tell us that the email creating a political cover story for the Benghazi attack wasn't actually about Benghazi. Carney insisted, "The email and the talking points were not about Benghazi. They were about the general situation in the Muslim world." Sometimes even we're amazed by the brazenness of their lies. Be sure to read the truth. Comment | Share GOP Defeats Minimum Wage Hike Democrats' proposed minimum wage hike -- a 40% increase from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour -- is dead for now. Senate Republicans successfully blocked the proposal, which failed on a 54-42 vote. Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) was the lone Republican "yes." Democrats have made "income inequality" a centerpiece of their mid-term election campaign as they desperately grasp for anything that would distract from the ObamaCare disaster. But the minimum wage is similarly destructive, killing hundreds of thousands of jobs and raising prices for consumers. Not that Democrats really expected it to pass; the bill's real purpose is to serve as a bludgeon against Republicans. Obama claimed that Republicans "told Americans, 'you're on your own' -- without even looking them in the eye." Petulant as always. The bottom line is that the federal government isn't the solution to every problem. Comment | Share Amending the First Amendment You can always count on Democrats to fight the truly important battles. ObamaCare wreaking havoc on the health care system? Taxes and regulations torching economic growth? Foreign policy in shambles? None of those valiant efforts mean they're too busy to craft a constitutional amendment to restrict free speech during campaigns. Or, as The Hill puts it, "Senate Democrats will schedule a vote this year on a constitutional amendment to reform campaign finance as they face tens of millions of dollars worth of attack ads from conservative groups." In other words, Harry Reid is taking his sorry crusade against the Koch brothers to another level. Who would've thought "too much speech" is really what ails us? Comment | Share ObamaCare 'Not the Holy Grail' The ever-delusional Steny Hoyer predicts that ObamaCare will not factor much into this November's midterms. The facts: Many incumbents are suddenly skeptical of the law at best, while others have begun distancing themselves amid negative public opinion. Americans still hate ObamaCare despite the White House's incessant bragging about it, and that low opinion is also reflected in Barack Obama's sliding approval rating. But Hoyer says, "I think health care at worst is going to be a neutral in this election. This is not the holy grail of this election." Really? Funny then that the Democrat slogan is practically straight out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail: "Run away, run away!" Comment | Share Opposition to Obama Is Racist Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) thinks Justice Clarence Thomas is an "Uncle Tom," and that Republicans are racist for opposing Barack Obama. "I've been in Washington. I saw three presidents now. I never saw George Bush treated like this. I never saw Bill Clinton treated like this with such disrespect," Thompson said. "That Mitch McConnell would have the audacity to tell the president of the United States ... that 'I don't care what you come up with we're going to be against it.' Now if that's not a racist statement I don't know what is." Well, it's an ideological one, but racist? Come on. Thompson adds, "Now all of a sudden, government is the worst thing in the world since a black man became president." When John Kerry unsuccessfully ran for president in 2004, his waffling positions became so legendary that former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino trained her dog to retrieve a flip-flop at the mention of Kerry's name. Well, it seems neither the passage of time nor the ascension to U.S. secretary of state has lessened Kerry's ability to say one thing and then say another. Unfortunately, the repercussions now are much greater than they were on the campaign trail. The most recent case in point is Kerry's inflammatory and now infamous remark about America's strongest ally in the Middle East, Israel. Speaking about the now-failed "peace" talks -- which were supposed to be a crowning jewel of Kerry's cabinet tenure but instead ended last night at midnight in another stalemate -- Kerry said, "A two-state solution will be clearly underscored as the only real alternative. Because a unitary state winds up either being an apartheid state with second-class citizens -- or it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state." He added, "Once you put that frame in your mind, that reality, which is the bottom line, you understand how imperative it is to get to the two-state solution, which both leaders, even yesterday, said they remain deeply committed to." The remark, made in a closed-door meeting of the Trilateral Commission of high-level leaders from around the world, has rightly outraged Jewish leaders, as the term "apartheid" most commonly brings to mind the racial segregation that defined South Africa for nearly half of the 20th century. It was so bad that even Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) noted that "any linkage between Israel and apartheid is nonsensical and ridiculous." Seeking to backtrack in classic "I voted for it before I voted against it" fashion, Kerry quickly issued a non-apology clarification: "I will not allow my commitment to Israel to be questioned by anyone, particularly for partisan, political purposes, so I want to be crystal clear about what I believe and what I don't believe," Kerry said in the statement, adding, "I do not believe, nor have I ever stated, publicly or privately, that Israel is an apartheid state or that it intends to become one. Anyone who knows anything about me knows that without a shred of doubt." Droning on per his usual, Kerry said, "I have been around long enough to also know the power of words to create a misimpression, even when unintentional, and if I could rewind the tape, I would have chosen a different word to describe my firm belief that the only way in the long term to have a Jewish state and two nations and two peoples living side by side in peace and security is through a two state solution." Now, some might paint Kerry's comments as a thoughtless slip, but this is an unconvincing argument. As The Wall Street Journal's James Taranto writes of the closed-door meeting, "The purpose of granting such an assurance of confidentiality is to encourage candor. And it is hard to believe that Kerry would be especially careless in his choice of words before such an eminent audience." Much more likely is that the promise of confidentiality freed Kerry to say what he truly thinks. Indeed, swooping to Kerry's defense yesterday afternoon was White House Press Secretary James Carney, who said that while the word "apartheid" was the wrong choice, the White House agrees with the message Kerry was expressing. In other words, "We mean apartheid but we're not saying apartheid." The White House teleprompter apparently was not available to provide an emergency replacement word. The tragedy in all of this is not Kerry's backpedaling or Carney's lexical jig. Rather, it's the open insult of one of America's greatest allies -- an ally that, day by day, this administration increasingly treats like an enemy. Comment | Share Botched Execution Sparks Clash Over Death Penalty Stephanie Neiman was 19 and just out of high school in 1999 when she and a friend arrived at a home that was being burglarized. Three assailants bound and gagged both women and the man who owned the house, drove them out a dusty country road, raped both women, and then shot Neiman twice and buried her alive because they believed she would report them to police.
