3-Gun Essentials

Proper Stretching for Peak Performance

By: Chris Andersen, 3-Gun Nation Pro Shooter

One of the best things about 3-Gun is that it is dynamic. Lots of speed and athletic movement while shooting cool guns. That was the biggest draw for me when I entered the sport. But one of the dangers of this sort of sport, especially for the uninitiated, is that injuries due to those dynamic movements are possible, especially if you don't prepare your body properly for the task at hand.

Having been involved in athletics my whole life, it came pretty naturally to me to do always do the proper stretches before exerting myself in a physical 3-gun stage. But I am still amazed at the number of people that don't. By skipping the opportunity to stretch, you are setting yourself up for an injury. Large matches may have you only shooting three or four stages in a day. Which means a lot of sitting around letting joints and muscles tighten up causing the potential for a strain or pull, or worse when you try and make an explosive transition. I have collected a few handy web links for you to use from different running, and medical websites that give some great pre-game stretching ideas that apply to our sport:

First, decide how to prepare
Take a look at the stage at hand and the types movements you will be making. If there is a lot of running or twisting for example, be sure to focus on stretches that will help you be loose for that particular type of demand on your body. Five minutes spent stretching out your hamstrings, quads, calf muscles and glutes can save you a sore week at work next week, or maybe even a trip to the ER. This link has some great stretches used by runners to make sure they are loose for a similar activity.

Avoid the dreaded "tennis elbow"
Odds are if you have shot many matches, you have seen experienced shooters wearing a brace on their forearm because of a very common, tennis elbow type injury common to those in our sport. Wrist flexor and extensor stretches can help you prevent this injury, or lessen it's effects when you are fighting it. Excessive wear and tear on tendons can result with the stresses of shooting if you don't spend time properly stretching them. Here are some helpful stretches from WebMD.

Get loose
Your upper body, back and neck get used and abused a lot when you have a stage with a lot of twisting and transitions so keeping them loose is important. The added benefit to being properly stretched upper body is that your muscles will have significantly less tension, meaning you will be smoother. And smooth is fast. Check out these great back and neck stretches from HSS online.

Mind your surroundings
Just as important as being loose, is being prepared to perform the task at hand. If on your upcoming stage, you have to climb over or onto something, make sure that you practice that movement. Testing your ability to make the motion required insures that you, and your joints are not caught off guard. It is also important to make sure you have the belt configuration you plan to use on the stage on your person, so that you are accurately prepared for that particular movement with all of your gear set up as it will be when you do it on the clock.

There is no shortage of great information on stretches used for other sports like the ones I cite here on the web. So use them. Don't be that guy at the match that had to make a trip to the emergency room. Warm up, get stretch out and loose. That will insure you keep performing at your best.

TNVC / Scuderia Corsa Ferrari Racing

Jeff Westphal drives the #63 Ferrari 458 for Scuderia Corsa, the Los Angeles based Ferrari team competing in its first full season of Grand-AM. With TNVC as a sponsor, Jeff brings you a behind the scenes perspective on the ARFCOM forums. If you haven't seen the thread yet, be sure to check it out and look for updates before and after each race!

RACE: Circuit of the Americas

|

START: 17th

|

FINISH: 11th

How does a great driver improve themselves? More seat time of course... Jeff raced not one car, but two in Austin. He participated in both the Continental Tire Sportscar Championship driving a BMW 128i, as well as the Tudor United Sportscar Championship in his #63 Ferrari 458.

Excerpt from the forum thread, leading up to the race:

Austin race weekend started on the Monday before the race, when I received a phone call from a team owner other than my own, asking if I was interested in helping them out with their second car (the #22 Burton BMW 128i). The current driver situation had some changes, and they wanted to fill the hole by adding me to the roster. Once I cleared this with my current team, Scuderia Corsa, I started to prepare mentally (and physically) for driving on one of the hottest weekends we've had this season, twice as much as normal.

This was a goal of mine, to pull "double duty" and race in both the Continental Tire Sportscar Championship as well as the Tudor United Sportscar Championship, or whatever multi syllabic name they go by these days. And as a driver/independent contractor, it's important to talk to everybody and develop relationships for opportunities just like this. If there were a Racecar Driver 101 course in college, the first topic would be networking and what it can do for you. You never know what can happen from relationships or introductions, even if it's intangible immediately, a year or two down the road your name could come up, so I view every opportunity as a potential new network of contacts and opportunities both in the motorsport business and out.

... (from BMW race)

I got back to pit lane and put down 2 water bottles and one Gatorade, then proceeded to walk down pit lane to cool off. I had driven the car up to 5th place, and we only lost 1 spot during the pit stop, so Conor sat a strong 6th, still the first BMW in the field. Through the remainder of the race (just over 1 HR), Conor made up 2 spots with rain that became heavier as the race progressed and brought the Burton Racing BMW home in 4th place, almost a podium and a 2014 season best. Job well done, now I have 15 minutes to change and get into the Ferrari for our last Practice before the race.

... (from Ferrari race)

As I got out of the car, I realized how hot I really got in the car. I actually had a hard time forming my words to my engineer about the car over the stint. I took 1 water and 1 Gatorade, and once I started to have my heart rate slow I grabbed some food, a sandwich to be exact. Just a scant 30 minutes later, after Balzan pit with a flat tire, he called in reporting heat stroke. Loss of vision and loosing the head's ability to focus. My engineer turns to me and gives me the "Suit up" gesture. "WHAT!? I literally just finished my food and my Pellegrino soda, I hardly think this is a good time to get BACK in the car for 50 minutes more. But it didn't matter, the point is that the #63 needs to get in and out of pit lane as FAST as possible, then turn laps for the remainder of the race...

RACE: Petit LeMans

|

START: 13th

|

FINISH: 9th

Petit Le Mans is one of those endurance races that every driver wants to compete in and win. It hosted at a track that is usually in a driver's top 5 due to the elevation challenge and the high-speed nature of the lap.

The day seemed to blur by for me, from responsibility to responsibility in the morning, with the car being ready to roll by 10am for an 11am race start. 10HRs of racing that ends in the dark, with a speed disparity between traffic that is a recipe for memories, or disaster.

For me, I found that I would be 2nd into the #63 after Balzan started the first stint, so I was ready to drive, in the right frame of mind from 11:30am on. We started P13, and If I recall I received the car in 11th.

As the car dropped off the air jacks, and the lollipop turned to green, I revved the 4.5 V8 and waited for the lollipop to move. Up it goes, I dump the clutch, spin the new Continental tires to help alleviate the sheen on them as well as not stall leaving the pit box, and accelerate to the pit lane speed of 45mph.

For the next 30 minutes, I begin to hone in on the handling of my racecar, and see the cars ahead as they slowly came towards me. One after another, reminding myself "go catch that guy, get him!" as to not overdrive the car, but to not get complacent as well.

A yellow comes out 35mins into my stint, in which we decide to take tires and fuel when the pits open. On the speed limiter in the pit lane, locate the box visually while staying at speed, turning in and stopping right on the board. The car goes in the air, fuel and tires are being added, then the air jacks release, car drops, rev's up, ready to launch. I leave pit lane and notice that the cars in my class ahead of me in the pack are fewer and fewer, and I begin to go "hunting" again at the drop of the green. Another 30 mins, and some more positions we get a second yellow, at which point I was up to 4th place.

Read the rest of Jeff's perspective, find out what happened, and much more in the forum thread covering Scuderia Corsa.

Westphal Shines at Petit, #63 Scores top 10

The Tudor United Sportscar Championship, the result of this year's merger between the two prominent sportscar racing championships in the US; American Le Mans Series and Grand Am, has come to a close this past weekend at the Petit Le Mans. Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga has played home to the USA's tribute to the famous French Endurance race for quite some time, and it was the finale for Scuderia Corsa and Jeff Westphal in their first year of the Tudor Championship.

Westphal had been to Road Atlanta last year with Grand Am, scoring a 3rd place, yet this would be his first Petit Le Mans, a 10 Hour endurance race that finishes in the dark similar to Sebring's famous 12HR event. "I was very excited for my first Petit, especially in a Ferrari for Scuderia Corsa. We've had an up and down year together with some wins, and some DNF's, so I am hoping that our great average lap pace will put us in a good position for hours 9 & 10." Said Jeff

With the Tudor Championship being a multi class, and multi manufacturer event, the series employs something called B.O.P. Balance of Performance is the way in which the officials regulate the horsepower, weight and performance of each manufacture of vehicle to provide their interpretation of equality. However in the last two events of the year, the flood gates have opened for Porsche cars, so the championship winning Ferrari of 2013 would be stifled in it's allowed performance at the moment. "The BOP right now is not balanced, we are 1 second off the Porsche's and a few other cars that make way more aero grip than us, they have just flat out been given too much recently. All the data is there to support the imbalance, yet nothing is being done. Unfortunately, that's life in our multi class series at the moment." Explained the Californian

Scuderia Corsa would qualify 13th, and finish in 9th after Westphal drove the car to race high of 4th position, but co-drivers ran into issues with traffic allowing the #63 Ferrari to go 2 laps down from the leaders after Westphal hoisted the car in the top 5. "I am disappointed with our result ultimately, because I knew we didn't have the car to win out of sheer speed, but I thought we could've thrown the dart and stuck in the top 5 for the race, which would have been a nice accolade considering the regulations. Having said that, I am looking forward to what next year holds for Scuderia Corsa, Ferrari, and myself!" elated Westphal.

National Rifle Association Launches Second Round of Advertising in Anti-Bloomberg Campaign; Powerful Ad Features Violent Crime Survivor Calling Out Bloomberg Hypocrisy

Fairfax, Va. – The National Rifle Association today launched the second round of advertising in a national campaign aimed at exposing Michael Bloomberg's anti-freedom agenda. The second ad of the "Meet the Real Michael Bloomberg" campaign is a powerful to-camera ad titled "Kim" and features violent crime survivor Kimberly Weeks speaking directly to Michael Bloomberg. The "Kim" ad is part of a $2 million plus national advertising campaign and will air on television stations across America.

"Kimberly has a powerful personal message that effectively exposes the lies and hypocrisy of Bloomberg's $50 million campaign aimed at taking away Americans' Second Amendment rights," said NRA spokesman Jennifer Baker. "To Michael Bloomberg this may be just a pet project to satisfy his enormous ego and control the lives of everyone around him, but to ordinary American citizens it has a very dangerous impact."

As a college student, Kimberly was brutally attacked in her apartment. She was overpowered and defenseless against her attacker. After her horrific experience, Kimberly got her concealed carry permit for self defense. When Kimberly was assaulted, she had to plead with her attacker to spare her life during her harrowing ordeal.

Later, when testifying before the Colorado legislature, she pled with lawmakers, who were considering legislation to ban concealed carry on college campuses, not to strip her of the right to carry on her college campus. She didn't want to be left defenseless again.

In this powerful NRA ad, Kimberly stands up to Michael Bloomberg and his gun control efforts. She calls out Michael Bloomberg on his hypocrisy and says, "Mr. Bloomberg you do not have the right to tell me how to defend myself."

"The men and women of the NRA will not allow Michael Bloomberg to use lies and millions of dollars in deceptive advertising to impose his extreme anti-freedom agenda on the American people. Our effort will expose Bloomberg as an arrogant hypocrite who wants to take away our rights. In this ad we are giving a voice to those who will be harmed by his agenda," concluded Baker.

Mark Kelly Lies About Gun Sales Before I-594 Vote

On Tuesday, five weeks before voters in Washington State will decide whether to require "universal" background checks on firearm transfers, gun control advocate Mark Kelly lied on national television about how many such transactions occur without a background check. Asked by CNN, Kelly said (at 3:30 in the video), "right now 60 percent of all gun sales go--occur--with a background check. Why do we allow the 40 percent, the other 40 percent, to happen?"

Kelly and his wife, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, are the co-founders of the gun control group, Americans for Responsible Solutions. On their group's website, they make the "40 percent" claim in its most common form, saying "up to 40 percent of all gun transfers . . . take place without a background check."

However they choose to word it, the claim is false, and even the media have been saying so for more than two years. In July 2012, the Tampa Bay Times faulted Michael Bloomberg for claiming "There's a loophole where you can sell guns without a background check at a gun show. Forty percent of guns are sold that way, same thing on the internet."

Bloomberg said that the "40 percent" figure came from a study co-authored by gun control supporter Philip Cook in 1997 (a year before the national instant check system became operational). However, Times' PolitiFact reporters Jon Greenberg and Molly Moorhead asked Cook if he considered the "40 percent" figure to be a reliable estimate of secondary market gun sales currently. Cook's response, as Greenberg and Moorhead reported, was "I have no idea. This survey was done almost 20 years ago."

Unfortunately, anti-gun activists are not only willing to say just about anything to get "universal" checks imposed, they are willing to say it often, because they believe it's the stepping stone to the gun control restrictions they ultimately seek.

Eight months after Bloomberg's "40 percent" claim was refuted, President Obama repeated it during a White House event promoting his multi-faceted gun control agenda. But this time it was one of the most the anti-gun newspapers in the country that declared it false. Noting that Professor Cook and his 1997 study's co-author, Jens Ludwig, had written "we don't know the current percentage -- nor does anyone else," the Washington Post's FactChecker, Glenn Kessler, rated Obama's claim "Three Pinocchios."

Shamelessly, Obama still uses the "40 percent" claim on the White House website's gun violence page and within his Now Is The Time gun control plan. Similarly, the increasingly tiresome Bloomberg, who is underwriting the I-594 campaign, repeats the claim in propaganda published by his anti-gun "Mayors" and "Everytown" groups here, here, here and here. The figurehead of his anti-gun "moms" group, Shannon Watts, repeated it on NBC's "Meet the Press 24/7" in April.

Kelly is a former astronaut, so we could poke fun at him for being "Lost in Space" and for "astronomically" exaggerating the figure for private gun transfers, and we could urge him to "return to Earth" with his rhetoric. For Lost in Space fans, we could even say that his figure "does not compute."

However, what Kelly, Giffords, Bloomberg, Watts and Obama are trying to do is not a joking matter. They are trying to deceive the public into supporting something that they know couldn't possibly prevent criminals from getting guns, but that could pave the way for worse gun control restrictions in the future.

No amount of gun control propaganda changes the fact that most criminals get guns by stealing them, buying stolen guns on the black market, and by getting straw purchasers to go through background checks to buy guns for them. Requiring more checks can't change that, anti-gun activists know it, but they push for "universal" checks anyway because they believe that background check systems can eventually be morphed into registries of gun sales and, over time, registries of gun owners.

That, along with the inability of any background check system to prevent criminals from getting guns, is why defeating "universal" check restrictions and the candidates who support them should be an ongoing priority for gun owners throughout the United States.

TNVC NV Tips

Stop Losing Your Chemlights

Admittedly, this tip might not be for everyone. But, we have plenty of customers who go into harm's way and carry Chemlight Sticks with them to do everything from marking cleared areas to signaling.

One of the easiest way to carry Chemlights is by simply placing them through the loops of PALS webbing on your equipment. But, that can sometimes create an issue with them slipping through during strenuous activity, causing you to lose them and leave a sign that you and your team were there.

An easy way to help retain your Chemlights in your PALS webbing is to attach a small zip tie around the base, leaving the tail.

The Tail will catch on the top of the PALS loop, preventing the Chemlight from sliding down, while also providing you with a small tab to pull for easier access. This is especially true when wearing gloves.

Colorado Recall

Background: In early 2013, the Colorado legislature passed a series of gun control bills following the Aurora, Colorado theater shooting and the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The new laws provided for a ban on magazines holding more than fifteen rounds of ammunition, a universal background check, and a requirement that buyers pay a fee for the background check.

The Colorado recall election of 2013 was a successful effort to recall two Colorado State Senators. Efforts were started to recall State Senate President John Morse, State Senator Angela Giron, and other Democrats following the support of strict new gun control legislation. It was the first time a state legislator in Colorado had been recalled and it was a grassroots effort, triggered by the perception that the two senators were not listening to the concerns of the public.

The recall drive against Morse was spearheaded by the Basic Freedom Defense Fund (BFDF) and the El Paso County Freedom Defense Committee. The recall drive against Giron was led by Pueblo Freedom and Rights. The leaders of these movements are ARFCOMmers, and were recently recognized by the NRA.

"So I was taking shower while enjoying a chocolate chip cookie when…"

On September 11th, 2014, ARFCommers SCDontTreadOnMe, Reptar_Head, FaucetFace and KeithC arrived in Washington, D.C., to receive the NRA-ILA's annual Jay M. Littlefield Memorial Volunteer Organization Award on behalf of our recall groups, Pueblo Freedom and Rights (PFR) and the Basic Freedom Defense Fund (BFDF). It was quite an honor and we greatly appreciated the recognition (especially since a member of the executive staff "came out" as a fellow ARFCommer).

None of us had a single clue about politics or running campaigns when we decided to recall state senators and we faced a dauntingly steep learning curve, strewn with obstacles erected by both state Democrats and Republicans alike. It was nearly nine uninterrupted months of stress and anxiety, punctuated by desperation and frustration. We dealt with media attacks, rampant voter apathy and betrayal by supposed allies, all while trying to keep our organizations' financial heads above water, at one point hocking personal firearms to keep the cash flowing.

Many of us worked full-time jobs and raised families, only to pull a second shift once the dinner dishes were clear, disappearing from the lives of spouses and children as we traveled from meeting to meeting, sat in on hours-long conference calls or penned press releases, letters begging for aid, and anything that would get fellow citizens off the couch and into the fight. One man had his pets attacked and killed in retaliation for his efforts. Another was hospitalized for a month with spinal injuries and kidney failure suffered during his near-constant travel around the state. Relationships were strained and business opportunities were missed, all made secondary to achieving what was declared to be impossible.

It was, to make a massive understatement, not the most pleasant of experiences. But it didn't matter. It didn't stop us. It couldn't stop us.

Even now, with the recalls fading into history, we aren't done. We've each embarked on different but connected missions to reclaim our rights in our home state and to spread brushfires of liberty around the country.

  • Victor Head : leader of Pueblo Freedom and Rights (PFR), is now running for county clerk in Pueblo. If elected, he would bring some much-needed integrity and real transparency to the election process in his corner of the state
  • Tim Knight : former President of the Basic Freedom Defense Fund (BFDF) and the man who began the recall movement in Colorado, confirmed that he will be on the 2015 ballot for the NRA's Board of Directors
  • Luke Wagner : original Board Member of the BFDF, is now the President of the Colorado Second Amendment Association (C2AA), working to get Coloradans engaged in defending their own rights instead of passively waiting for them to be salvaged by some outside group
  • Keith Coniglio : former Secretary of the BFDF and now Secretary of the C2AA, is working alongside Luke to motivate Coloradans but is also writing a book about the recall experience and is launching his own pro-liberty website, Descendants of Liberty Press, as a vehicle to inspire people around the country to stand up and fight, regardless of the odds, and to educate them on how to do it

We didn't take this path for awards or accolades. We did it because liberty is not a spectator sport and we cannot allow attacks upon it to go unanswered. We started this fight because, simply, it was the right thing to do. We persevered because we were duty-bound to give everything we could in defense of our rights. And we succeeded in good part because of ARFCom's members, who joined us financially, emotionally and in some cases physically to secure this beachhead.

So, while the NRA has honored us, we'd like to take this opportunity to honor you. Thank you for all you've done to help freedom. We hope we can count on you to help us do more.

Left to right: Jim Porter, NRA President; Victor Head (Reptar_Head); Tim Knight (SCDontTreadOnMe); Luke Wagner (FaucetFace); Erik Groves, BFDF attorney (who really needs to become an ARFCommer); Keith Coniglio (KeithC); Chris Cox, NRA-ILA Executive Director

Book: Election

ELECTION: DEZINFORMATSIYA AND THE GREAT GAME
By: Chris Graham

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction—You've heard that -- right? Well, is it also possible that fiction is sometimes less unlikely than widely promoted obfuscation? Before now; when was the last time you heard officials enthusiastically proclaiming that their actions were based on incompetence (but NOT corruption)? Is that a valid criminal defense? Is that an acceptable justification to keep a job in a position of authority?

Having watched the same news stories you did, I found myself scratching my head… What if I employed the SCIENTIFIC METHOD? What if I always assumed the simplest explanations first and required them to be disproven before considering long-winded, contorted and unlikely "The-Dog-Ate-My-Homework", self-serving alibis from officials in legal jeopardy?

Well, that's exactly what I did. AND I combined that point-of-view with a knowledge of current events and detailed knowledge of enemy tactics from my lifetime study of history and experience as a military officer and created a novel that I believe you will find MIND BLOWING!

NRA-ILA: Latest Updates

Fact Checkers Appoint Themselves Arbiters of What Constitute Gun Rights

In the past, NRA has detailed the tendency of mainstream media "fact checkers" to skew information to support a particular viewpoint or agenda. This tradition continued this week as the Tampa Bay Times' PolitiFact and the Washington Post's Fact Checker both took issue with an NRA ad running against Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu. The ad correctly states that "Mary Landrieu voted to take away your gun rights," following images of a mother at home with a child during a break-in.

Sick Joke MSNBC Blames NRA for Ebola Crisis

In what appears to be an attempt to upstage Louis Farrakhan's assertion that Ebola is an invented "race-targeting weapon," MSNBC and gun control organization States United are pointing the finger at NRA for the ongoing public health crisis. According to their "logic," NRA's opposition to Obama's nomination of anti-gun activist Vivek Murthy as Surgeon General has exacerbated the Ebola crisis, as Americans supposedly have nowhere else to turn for reliable information on the outbreak.
