Qalamoun battle fateful for Assad, Nasrallah, Soleimani
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report
The battle for Qalamoun has suddenly become a critical regional contest for the Iran-Syrian-Hizballah alliance at large and its three prime movers, Syrian President Bashar Assad, Hizballah leader Hassan Nastrallah, and Iran's Gen. Qassem Soleimani, head of the Al Qods Brigades. The Obama administration is engaged in a new plan to drive a wide in the Revolutionary Guards leadership by elevating its leader Gen. Jaafari to the regime's "good guy" and denouncing Gen. Soleimani as the "bad guy." Degrading his status, it is hoped in Washington, may cause Iran to pull in its horns in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

Saudi king, followed by GCC rulers, snubs Obama on Camp David summit. US fails to isolate Netanyahu on nuclear deal
DEBKAfile Special Report
Saudi King Salman's last-minute cancellation of his White House summit with US President Obama was seen as a calculated snub for the president's Iran and Mid East policies. Two senior Gulf rulers then opted out of the Camp David summit Obama scheduled for Wednesday, May 13 at Camp David: Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isaa Al Khalifa and UAE Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan. The meeting takes place after Secretary of State John Kerry failed to override Gulf resistance to the US nuclear deal with Iran. His success would have isolated Binyamin Netanyahu in the Middle East. Washington and the GCC also remained sharply at odds on the Syrian war and the Bashar Assad's political future, while the Saudis had a bone to pick with the US on its lack of promised support on Yemen

At least 250 Hizballah losses in Qalamoun battle. Nasrallah pushes for Lebanese army to enter Syrian war
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report
Amid Hizballah's rising war losses - estimated as at least 250 in the past week - its leader Hassan Nasrallah strongly urged the Lebanese chief of staff Gen. Jean Kahwagi to send his troops into battle over the strategic Qalamoun Mountain, alongside Hizballah and the Syrian army, DEBKAfile discloses. The Lebanese general gave him a flat no, saying the Lebanese army would not "slip" into any war inside Syria. Despite local gains by Syria and Hizballah, rebel jihadists have grasped that they can slip across into Lebanon unopposed. Obama greets new Israeli govt with push for Palestinian state

Shortly after Binyamin Netanyahu's new government was confirmed, President Barack Obama said Israel's long-term security would be best served by reaching an agreement to live alongside a recognized Palestinian state.
"I continue to believe a two-state solution is absolutely vital for not only peace between Israelis and Palestinians, but for the long-term security of Israel as a democratic and Jewish state," Obama told a news conference at Camp David where he was hosting a Gulf leaders' conference. "I know that a government has been formed that contains some folks who don't necessarily believe in that premise, but that continues to be my premise," he said.
"That prospect seems distant now, but I think it's always important for us to keep in mind what's right and what's possible."
