The Conversation We Won't Have
Yet again we have a twenty-something white male loner or semi-loner who got a gun and decided to kill people. In most cases we have found that the mass shooter was mentally disturbed. In this case, it looks more and more than Dylann Roof was just a servant of an evil that says some of those created in the image of God are better than others or that some people are not created in the image of God at all.

As a nation, when these things happen, we never have the conversation about real evil. We also never have the conversation about mental health. For that matter, we don't have honest conversations about why some kid in Minnesota or Alabama would want to go join ISIS and kill their fellow citizens or why some kid would want to join neo-nazis or a gang.

Instead, we descend into partisan conversations where everything is political and neither side can concede or acknowledge the other's points. Everyone and everything gets blamed while ignoring the actual person who killed.

I realize now why that is. I realize why we will never have the conversation we should have.

The Environmental Encyclical and the assault on Faith and Reason
In 1663, Pope Urban VIII sided with the "scientific consensus" and had the heliocentric observations of Galileo anathemized. That marks, as far as I can tell, the last intervention of the Catholic Church in science. Indeed, Catholic scientists such as Louis Pasteur, the Augustinian friar Gregor Mendel, the Catholic priest Georges Lemaître were on the cutting edge of science. That is, until today.

Yesterday the Vatican released the long awaited papal encyclical, "Laudato Si'," or "Praise Be to You" and while not as bad as expected, it was pretty bad.

Ecology Theology
I am not Catholic and I am not overly concerned about Pope Francis's encyclical. But even us Protestants should remember that the Bible does have an ecology theology in it.

Good for the Southern Baptist Convention
It is refreshing to see virtually all the past still-living leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention join their current leader in taking a principled stand against gay marriage.

Regardless of what the Supreme Court decides, churches need to speak forcefully on Biblical teachings and this is one.

I hope preachers who have been wavering and refusing to speak up might now be emboldened by the largest Protestant denomination in America speaking with moral clarity.

More of this please.

…. but NSA gathering public information was the REAL threat
On a multi-user computer system, different user accounts have different permissions. In most Unix-based systems, there is a special account besides. Account zero, the 'root' user, bypasses all permissions checks. The Chinese attackers had root access to Office of Personnel Management servers.

Follow us on Twitter View this as website BY JAMIE MCINTYRE ADVERTISEMENT FROM 'CATCH AND RELEASE' TO 'DETAIN AND DEPORT': After months of hard-nosed negotiation behind closed doors in the Senate, the text of a compromise $118 billion national security supplemental budget bill, which includes major concessions from the Democrats on border security and desperately needed aid for Ukraine, was released last night. Senators now have two days to read and digest it before a Wednesday vote. Sen. James Lankford (R-OK), the lead GOP negotiator, said the bill contains all the most vital reforms Republicans have demanded and called it a "once-in-a-generation opportunity to close our open border." "The bill provides funding to build the wall, increase technology at the border, and add more detention beds, more agents, and more deportation flights. The border security bil
