view the web version of this email DAILY ALERT FOR Friday, May 31, 2019   LEGAL & LEGISLATION New York: Legislature Attempting to Moot Supreme Court Review of NYC Law On Wednesday, the Senate Codes Committee passed S.6151 (Kavanaugh) on a 9 to 4 vote.   NEWS Texas: Journalists Stretching the Truth…Again Journalists who have become mouthpieces for gun control groups have loudly declared victory over the NRA following the recent adjournment of the Texas Legislature.  They announced the resounding "defeat" with Texas legislators adding funds to the 2020-2021 budget for the Department of Public Safety to establish and promote a statewide safe gun storage campaign.  Since the mainstream media won't, let's set the record straight.    NEWS Senate Rejects Amendments: Canada's Bill C-71 Poised to Become Law The Senate is often referred to as Parliament's "chamber of sober second thought" in relation to decisions made by the elected members of the House of Commons. However, the red chamber not only gave the Liberal government's gun control bill, C-71, third reading this week, but did so after rejecting a report from the Senate's own committee that proposed significant amendments.   NEWS HUNTING  The Hardest Thing of All to Explain About Hunting The big black bear came in under the shade of pines. He didn't make a sound my ears caught over the raucous singing of red-winged blackbirds. I was in a stand 15 feet up a poplar tree and only knew the bear was coming because a little bear on the bait picked up his head and his body grew rigid.     NEWS Can Women Save Our Hunting Heritage By Themselves? We throw the stat around so casually: "Women make up the fastest growing demographic in hunting." But is that accurate? And, more importantly, if it is true, is it enough to reverse the decline in hunting?   NEWS Joe Biden's "Education" Plan Aims to "Defeat" the NRA, Reprise Failed Gun Control Law This week the campaign website for presidential hopeful Joe Biden published what it called an "Education … Plan for Educators, Students, and Our Future." Among its agenda items was to "[d]efeat the National Rifle Association" by "championing legislation to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines – bans [Biden] authored in 1994." In other words, Biden would reprise a law that was widely recognized (including among gun control advocates) as a failure and the cause of his party losing control of Congress 1994.    NEWS Bloomberg Course: Policies Based on Selective Evidence, Anti-Gun Preferences Week Three of the Bloomberg School of Public Health Coursera program, "Reducing Gun Violence in America: Evidence for Change," seemingly promised some substance. This week's module is titled "Evidence-Based Policies to Prevent Gun Violence" but the threshold for what qualifies as "evidence-based" is subjective. As in, the Bloomberg team selects what qualifies as evidence and what should just be done even in the absence of evidence.   NEWS A Closer Look at Federal Funding for "Gun Violence" Research "As a major cause of death in the U.S., gun violence is chronically under-researched." So goes the refrain from the gun-control chorus. It's a catchy tune, especially among those who think that the answer is greater government – and taxpayer – involvement:   LEGAL & LEGISLATION Louisiana: Senators Ronnie Johns and Eric LaFleur voted with Gun-Control Groups to Halt a Bill to Protect Law-Abiding Gun Owners Today, Senators Ronnie Johns and Eric LaFleur voted against a pro-gun bill that would protect law-abiding gun owners against a potential patchwork of gun control ordinances throughout the state.    LEGAL & LEGISLATION Texas: Attorney General Ken Paxton Issues Key Opinion on State Firearms Preemption Law On Friday, May 24, Attorney General Ken Paxton issued an important opinion clarifying Texas' State Firearms Preemption Law.   THE FEDERALIST It's Time For The Supreme Court To Make States Stop Ignoring The Second Amendment The Supreme Court has the chance to reinforce its 11-year-old message to the lower courts: the Second Amendment is not to be weighed against governmental interests. The people have a natural right to keep and bear arms. Courts must consider that right as important as our Founders and Framers did. Until that happens, governments across our republic will continue to ignore our rights, and the lower courts will not stop them.   AP Wyoming district teachers, staff, support allowing guns A solid majority of teachers and staff in a Wyoming school district say they support allowing employees to carry concealed guns for security purposes. The Gillette News-Record reports 58 percent of 533 employees polled by the Campbell County school district say they support arming district employees.   CHICAGO TRIBUNE What you should know about the gun control legislation awaiting a vote by the Illinois Senate With Illinois' legislative session rapidly winding down, Democratic lawmakers were pushing Thursday to secure votes needed to pass significant changes to the state's gun licensing procedures — over the objections of Second Amendment advocates who labeled the new regulations among the most "onerous" in the nation. The so-called Fix the FOID legislation — which narrowly passed in the Illinois House Wednesday but awaits a vote on the state Senate — comes more than three months after Aurora joined the national list of communities forced to endure the tragedy of a mass shooting.   BUSINESS INSIDER Salesforce is refusing to let its customers use its software to sell semi-automatic guns One of the most popular producers of business software has told customers they can't use its technology to sell semiautomatic weapons and firearms.   WASHINGTON FREE BEACON NRA Membership Dues, Contributions Rebounded In 2018 The National Rifle Association of America and its associated groups saw a sizable increase of both membership dues and contributions in 2018, according to the group's annual report.   NEWTOWNBEE Presidential Candidate John Hickenlooper Visits Newtown, Talks Gun Control John Wright Hickenlooper, Jr, United States presidential candidate for 2020, visited the C.H. Booth Library on May 25 to discuss his campaign stance on gun-related topics. Mr Hickenlooper served as the 42nd Governor of Colorado from 2011 to 2019 and is a member of the Democratic Party.   LEGAL & LEGISLATION California: Precursor Parts and DROS Increase Bill Pass Assembly On Tuesday, May 28, AB 879 and AB 1669 passed the Assembly and will be transmitted to the Senate for further consideration.  Next week, policy committees will resume work with the Senate Public Safety Committee considering Assembly Joint Resolution 4 and 5.
