| Fellow Conservative, Quotes from Heritage Member Call with President Dr. Kevin Roberts Dr. Roberts responding to a question about GOP complacency on Capitol Hill: "Under my leadership, [and we will do so with a smile], we will be very clear about expectations. As an example…when I met with the Republican study committee yesterday, kind of a broad swath of mostly conservative House members, but a few who are less conservative than us on this call. I said, look, we're going to disagree sometimes. And the world isn't ending....and what I mean by that is, you know where Heritage stands on the issues. We're going to be unabashed in our proclamation of them. And if you disagree, let me know. If we make a mistake, let me know. But most importantly, how about we start governing as conservatives? The more we can state that the more we can give them incentives for making the right votes, and disincentives for making the bad votes. I think we're going to win more." Dr. Roberts responding to a question about state-level activism: "I think [this caller] read my mind because several weeks ago...I mentioned to the Board of Heritage that I would continue that process until they got tired of hearing me say that the Heritage Foundation needed to be less DC centric.…[that] while Heritage will always be headquartered in DC, we have to be more present in the states. And to [this caller's] point, there are so many opportunities in upcoming legislative sessions for the Heritage Foundation to complement the work of great grassroots leaders, state and local based groups, [like] my former organization, the Texas Public Policy Foundation." Dr. Roberts responding to a question about the prospect of Roe v. Wade being overturned: "It almost literally brings tears to my eyes, to say the following because I've been praying for 20 years or more since I've became an ardent pro-lifer, that Roe v. Wade would be overturned in my children's lifetimes. I actually think it's going to happen in mine and in yours and the reason I do is that the arguments…by Mississippi Solicitor General, Scott Stewart were, in the words of the best Supreme Court advocate lawyer I know, Michael Ferris, the best arguments he's ever seen. We had a big gala dinner celebration, a bunch of pro-lifers here in DC last night. I attended that on my first day at Heritage because that's my number one issue and I was sitting there with tears in my eyes, thanking God for the opportunity that we have to finally correct this injustice." |
